Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a missile strike on a Saudi oil tanker in the northern Red Sea, saying the attack was part of a campaign targeting Saudi maritime activity.
The group’s military spokesperson said the tanker “Wafa” was hit near the Saudi coastal city of Yanbu by several ballistic missiles. The Houthis claimed the strike was successful and described it as part of what they called a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia.
The group said the attack was the latest in a series of operations launched since July 22, claiming that eight Saudi oil vessels have been targeted as part of the campaign. The Houthis also claimed that 29 Saudi oil tankers changed course or returned after being prevented from continuing their journeys.
There was no immediate confirmation from Saudi authorities regarding the alleged attack, the condition of the tanker, possible damage, or casualties.
The reported incident comes amid rising security concerns around major maritime routes in the Middle East, including the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait and Strait of Hormuz; waterways critical to global energy supplies and international trade.
The Red Sea has faced increased instability in recent months following repeated Houthi attacks on commercial vessels. The group has said its operations are linked to wider regional conflicts, while international governments have warned that attacks on shipping threaten global trade and energy markets.
The United States and its allies have increased naval operations in the region in response to threats against commercial shipping. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have also strengthened maritime security measures to protect key trade routes.
The latest claim adds to wider regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and Gulf states. The Houthis maintain close ties with Iran, although Tehran has denied directing the group’s military operations.
Saudi authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the alleged tanker strike, and it remains unclear whether the vessel suffered damage or whether maritime operations were affected.
