After three months after the destructive Herat earthquake, the International Red Cross Committee says that rural communities still need help to reconstruct their homes. The top priority for Herat’s earthquake survivors is safe and warm shelters.

In two earthquakes in Herat in October 2023, hundreds of people, particularly children and women, lost their lives. According to the Red Cross, these earthquakes destroyed over 380 villages, and some of the affected individuals are still living in tents.

An official at the Herat Red Cross stated, “The houses that were destroyed in the earthquake were all made of mud or bricks, and they were handmade, which is why they quickly collapsed.”

Teams from the Red Crescent, the Red Cross, and other humanitarian organizations have been working on local and resilient shelter projects.

On Sunday, the International Red Cross Committee announced that they have distributed cash aid to the affected individuals multiple times and provided assistance in constructing shelters.

The committee stated that the Red Crescent has assisted over 112,000 people in 40 villages with emergency shelters, household items, food, and health services.

However, it appears that the aid from the Red Cross Committee and other international organizations has not significantly changed the situation of the homeless earthquake survivors.
