Heavy rains in Nepal over the past 36 hours have triggered landslides and flash floods, resulting in the tragic death of at least 11 people. Key highways and roads have been blocked due to the natural disasters.

According to police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki, eight people are currently missing, presumed washed away by floods or buried under landslides. Additionally, 12 others have sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment, Reuters reported.

Rescue operations are underway to clear landslides and reopen the blocked roads. Heavy machinery is being deployed to remove debris and restore connectivity.

In southeastern Nepal, the Koshi River has surpassed its danger level, raising concerns about potential floods in the adjoining areas of the eastern Indian state of Bihar.

The Narayani, Rapti, and Mahakali rivers in western Nepal are also experiencing rising water levels, posing further threats to nearby communities.

In Kathmandu, the capital city surrounded by hills, several rivers have breached their banks, causing flooding on roads and inundating numerous houses.

Local media reports depict scenes of residents navigating waist-deep water and using buckets to empty their flooded homes, illustrating the severity of the situation.

Since the onset of the annual monsoon rains in mid-June, Nepal has reported at least 50 fatalities due to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes, underscoring the perilous conditions exacerbated during this period.

These events highlight the recurring challenges Nepal and neighbouring regions face during the monsoon season, where landslides and flash floods pose significant risks to communities and infrastructure.
