The local officials in eastern Nangarhar province are saying that Hayatullah Hayat has been appointed as the new governor of the province to replace Mohammad Gulab Mangal who resigned from his position on Sunday.

The provincial government media office in a statement confirmed the appointment of Mr. Hayat as the new governor of the province.

The statement further adds that Mr. Hayat will be formally introduced to Nangarhar province by the Independent Directorate of the Local Governance.

Hayat was serving as the provincial governor of the southern Helmand province before he was appointed as the new governor of Nangarhar province.

Managal resigned from his position as the governor of Nangarhar province on Sunday as he cited personal issues behind his decision to step down from the provincial leadership.

In his last meeting with the provincial officials, Mangal vowed to forward the issues of Nangarhar province to the government leadership in Kabul.

He also talked regarding his accomplishments during the past one and half years during which he served as the governor of the province and said the security situation improved in several restive provinces under his leadership.

Mangal also added that he had utilized almost 60 percent of his time to improve the security situation of the province.
