The decision was reportedly taken during a meeting attended by members of the Hezb-e-Islami party of Afghanistan.
Head of the political affairs of Hezb-e-Islami Party of Afghanistan, Dr. Ghairat Baheer quoted by Benawa Newspaper, said it was concluded in the meeting the HIA will lend support to Qutbuddin Hilal in upcoming presidential elections.
According to Dr. Baheer, the members of Hebz-e-Islami Party had several meetings with presidential candidates in capital Kabul, and the reports of the meetings were presented to HIA leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
He said Hezb-e-Islami Party decided to support Qutbuddin Hilal since he was the only candidate who was eligible with the principles of the party.
Hekmatyar whose militant outfit is fighting the US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, had previously opposed the elections in the presence of foreign forces.
However, he asked his party members earlier this year to participate in the upcoming presidential elections.
“Hizb-e-Islami is not directly taking part in the elections due to the presence of occupation forces but will exercise the right of vote to get those candidates elected who are close to our party and ideology,” Hekmatyar said in his letter which was issued earlier in January.
