Ashraf GhaniPresident Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said the rejection of a presidential decree by the Afghan parliament is a setback in bring electoral reform.

A statement was released by the Office of the President following the rejection of the presidential decree unanimously during the general session of the Lower House of the Parliament.

President Ghani has said the government and people of Afghanistan were expecting that the lawmakers would recommend their views regarding the decree if any differences existed and then vote on it in a bid to help complete expedite the reforms and organize the elections.

The statement by the Palace further added that two special committees have already started work based on the agreement of the National Security Council and instructions of President Ghani to make security and financial arrangements for the elections.

President Ghani has also sent a letter to the United Nations to seek international support for the elections.

The statement also added that the government of Afghanistan will continue its efforts to organize the parliamentary elections and district councils elections and will seek ways for electoral reforms through legal reviews with the relevant organizations, political parties and civil society organizations.
