Tuesday, May 17 – According to NATO officials, four of its service members have died following an explosion in southern Afghanistan.

According to military officials, a powerful homemade bomb killed four U.S. service members Monday in southern Afghanistan.

The blast happened on Monday but NATO officials did not disclose further details regarding the deceased members nationalities.

Bombs known as improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, have caused the bulk of Western combat casualties in Afghanistan, despite concerted efforts to provide better protection for troops in the field, including sophisticated mine-resistant vehicles and improved body armor.

The latest deaths make a total of 16 NATO service members killed so far this month, and 167 so far this year.
