The asylum department of Finland has announced that “gender alone is now enough for applying for asylum”. The Finish Immigration Service takes this proactive measure in response to the deteriorating situation of women in Afghanistan.

Furthermore, the Finish Immigration Service has updated its instructions on processing applications submitted by Hazaras, whose status has deteriorated in Afghanistan. It is stated that not all Hazaras living in Afghanistan are in need of international protection, however, their individual circumstances, including gender and the locality where the ISIS attack, are taken into account.

Since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021, ISIS-Khorasan has carried out severe brutal attacks in western Kabul, a predominantly Hazara neighborhood, which resulted in the death of hundreds of innocent Hazaras civilians. The safety of Hazaras communities in Afghanistan is no more a priority for the Taliban-run administration because no security measures have been taken so far.

Meanwhile, the Finish Immigration Service has been gentle enough in processing applications submitted by Afghans. After the regime change in 2021, the asylum decision of Afghan nationals has been positive with no rejection cases. This is mainly due to the existing situation in Afghanistan that has made survival extremely difficult under the current regime.

Granting asylum status to Afghan women and girls is a positive step by the Finnish government. However, the drawback of this new initiative would be promoting illegal migration. Families would send their minor female members on dangerous journeys to seek asylum in Finland, which will put the safety of the migrants at immediate risk in transit countries.

To void illegal migration and displacement, Finland needs to cooperate with other governments and international organizations to respond to the humanitarian needs of displaced persons and promote stability and development in conflict areas.
