The new governor for the Faryab province was introduced by the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) on Monday, the government said in a statement.

According to a statement published on the IDLG’s Facebook page, Mohammad Daud Laghmani, assumed office as Faryab governor on Monday.

This comes as hundreds of public members, many loyal to Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum expressed opposition against this appointment through demonstrations and public gatherings in several north-eastern provinces.

In a voice message by Marshal Dostum leaked to the media, he instructs his men not to allow the new governor to assume office.

According to other sources, the new governor has been introduced inside a military camp in Maimana city and he has not yet been settled in the governor’s office due to public gatherings outside his new workplace.

Naqibullah Fayeq was the ex governor of Faryab province who was recently chosen as the Senate member by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
