Mansur FaqiryarThe Afghan goalkeeper Mansur Faqiryar is expected to play in the first World Cup qualifier match against Syria which is scheduled for upcoming Thursday.

The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) said Faqiryar is preparing for the match although he has not fully recovered from injuries he sustained earlier.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced earlier last that the Afghan team will face Syria at the Samen Stadium in Mashhad, near Iran’s border with Afghanistan on 11th of June.

Faqiryar is a prominent Afghan footballer who received the highest vote to receive the North Athlete of the Year Award in Germany, based on a poll conducted by Germany’s NDR Television Network lastyear.

Faqiryar was nominated for the award for his outstanding performance in VfB Oldenburg football division, and his performance for the Afghan national football team during the South Asia Football Federation (SAFF) championship.

Afghanistan has so far played two friendly matches against Laos and Bangladesh as part of preparatory matches for the World Cup qualifying tournament.

The Afghan team defeated Laos 2-0 last month but the match with Bangladesh ended in draw.
