On Friday, a suicide attack occurred in the second district of Pul-e Khumri city in Baghlan province. The explosion incident is reported to have taken place during Friday prayers within the confines of the “Imam Zaman” mosque.

Local reports state that around 30 people died, and 50 were injured. Taliban officials, however, have confirmed seven deaths and 17 injuries in the same event.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, has strongly denounced the attack on the Shia mosque in Baghlan. He has called for immediate measures to prevent similar attacks and ensure the Shia community’s safety and protection.

Mr. Bennett extended condolences to the victims’ families and stressed the need for prevention, protection, and response for the targeted Shia population in Afghanistan. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed solidarity with investigative teams on-site to assess the incident.

On Saturday, United Nations Security Council members issued an official statement that vehemently condemned the attack on the Imam Zaman Mosque in Pol-e-Khumri city.

In a statement from their office, the Security Council members emphasized that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains a grave threat to peace and security in Afghanistan and globally.

Notably, the ISIS group has claimed responsibility for this attack, underscoring the ongoing security challenges posed by extremist organizations in the region.
