An earthquake of 6.8 Magnitude that shook northeast Afghanistan on Tuesday night resulted in at least four fatalities, and about 80 injuries, officials said.
According to Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Public Health Ministry, “at least four people were killed, and 80 others were injured in the earthquake.”
He said the injured and killed people were from Badakhshan, Takhar, and Laghman provinces.
Shafiullah Rahimi, a spokesman for the State Ministry for Natural Disaster Management of the Taliban-led government, reported that 63 dwellings had been wholly and partially damaged and some cattle reportedly being lost.
The report indicated that most people were injured and lost their lives due to the collapse of the roofs of their homes in the respective provinces, and only 50 houses were lost in the Jurm district of Badakhshan province.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake’s epicenter was 40 kilometers to the south-southeast of Jurm district in Afghanistan’s Hindukush mountain range’s Badakhshan province, which borders Pakistan and Tajikistan, according to the US Geological Survey.
Badakhshan, Takhar, and Laghman are among the most prone-hazards provinces in the country and are vulnerable to devastating earthquakes.
