Donald Trump, former US president, will face charges in connection with payments made to a porn star shortly before the 2016 presidential election.
On Thursday, a grand jury in New York charged Donald Trump with making hush payments to a porn actress during his 2016 presidential campaign. His attempt to win the White House in 2024 has been derailed, making him the first former US president to be charged with a crime.
After looking into a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels to purchase her silence about an alleged affair, a grand jury indicted him.
Trump, 76, is the first former US president to be charged with a crime but maintains his innocence.
The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office verified that it had contacted Donald Trump’s attorneys on Thursday night to “coordinate his surrender” for an unidentified set of charges. Bragg has been leading the investigation.
“This evening, we contacted Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan DA’s office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal. Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected,” a spokesperson for District Attorney Bragg said.
Trump has called all of the probes political persecution and is seeking the Republican nomination to run for president again in 2024. Moreover, he attacked Bragg, accusing him of leading a politically motivated prosecution.
In the first case ever filed against a former US president, the indictment itself remains sealed as of right now.
