Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security in a press release on Sunday said that the four journalists arrested in Kandahar province were not registered with the Afghan government nor with international media.

The statement reads that their cases will be referred to relevant government bodies for further actions.

Bismillah Watandost, Qudratullah Sultani, Muhibullah Obaidi, and Sanaullah Seyam were arrested by the local office of NDS in Kandahar province after they returned from Spin Boldak district of the Province.

The former were employees of a local radio-Milat Ghag- and the latter is said to be the photographer of Xinhua News agency.

The NDS statement states that radio does not have the license and is not registered with the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan.

“Meanwhile the Xinhua News agency in a statement denied Sanaullah Seyam to be their photographer.” Reads NDS statement.

The local journalists are accused of propagating and weakening the morale of the Afghan government security forces as they recently interviewed the Taliban commanders including Pakistanis in Spin Boldak district.

The capture of journalists was condemned by media advocates in the country and amnesty internationals who had demanded their urgent release.
