kal_2153485bThe designer of the world’s most familiar and widely used weapon, AK-47 assault rifle, Mikhail Kalashnikov died on Monday at the age of the 94. He was born on 10 November 1919 in western Siberia.

Kalashnikov’s work as a weapons designer for the Soviet Union is immortalized in the name of the world’s most popular firearm.

He started out wanting to make farm equipment, but the harvest he reaped was one of blood as the designer of the AK-47 assault rifle.

The AK-47 rifle was completed in 1947 and was adopted by the Soviet army two years later. AK-47 is the world’s most popular firearm, favoured by guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of many armies. An estimated 100 million guns are spread worldwide.

Despite receiving many state honours, including the Order of Lenin and the Hero of Socialist Labour, he was often saying that he felt personally untroubled by his contribution to bloodshed.

However, he blamed the policies of other countries for many people killed by his weapon, and refused to accept the responsibility.

But he criticized the use of weapons by criminals and child soldiers. “It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon,” Kalashnikov said in 2008.

Kalashnikov had been hospitalized for the past month with unspecified health problems. He died in a hospital in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic where he lived.
