Deadly traffic incident in Pakistan leaves at least 56 dead

Pakistan traffic incidentAccording to Pakistani police officials, at least 56 people were killed following a traffic incident in southern Sindh province on Tuesday.

At least 18 children and 17 women were among those killed after a passenger bus collided head-on with a lorry near the city of Khairpur, 450km north of Karachi.

A senior police official Nasir Aftab told AFP, “The Karachi-bound passenger bus, which was coming from northwestern city of Swat went on the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a goods container, killing 56 people.”

Aftab said at least 17 people were also injured following hte incident and the health condition of three passengers was reported as critical.

Pakistan has an appalling record of fatal traffic accidents. Majority of the incidents are taking place due to reckless driving, poorly maintained surfaces or unsuitable vehicles.

However, the police officials are saying that Tuesday’s incident might have taken place due to a morning fog which covered the highway at the time of the collision.
