A deadly explosion ripped through a civilian vehicle in northern Balkh province leaving at least 12 civilians dead.

A senior official in Dawlabad district confirmed that an improvised explosive device exploded in Barbar Qala area of the district targeting a civilian vehicle.

The official further added that the explosion killed at least 12 civilians including several women and children.

Meanwhile, the 209th Shaheen Corps said in a statement that the explosion took place at around 6:40 am local time.

The statement further added that the vehicle was on its way to Mazar-e Sharif city when it struck an improvised explosive device.

The 209th Shaheen Corps also added that the majority of the victims are women and children.
