A heavy explosion rocked Daman district in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan on Sunday afternoon, leaving nearly 50 people killed or injured.
Provincial governor spokesman, Dawa Khan Meenapal confirmed an explosion has taken place near a clinic in Daman district.
He said at least five civilians were killed following the explosion and 39 others including Afghan army soldiers were injured.
In the meantime, eyewitnesses in the area area said the main target of the explosion was a convoy of the Afghan and coalition security forces.
Kandahar is among the volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in a number of its districts and frequently carry out insurgency attacks.
Ttwo suicide bombers attacked a convoy of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Maiwand district of Kandahar province on Saturday afternoon; however no casualties were incurred to coalition or civilians.
