A clash broke out between the anti-government armed militants and local residents in Zazai Maidan district of Khost province earlier today.

The local officials are saying at least ten militants annd three civilians have lost their lives during the clash.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Taliba Mangal confirmed the incident and said a standoff is underway in the area and additional forces have been deployed to suppress the militants.

He said a civilian has also sustained injuries during the clashes with the militants but did not elaborate further regarding the casualties of the armed forces.

Mangal further added that clashes started after a large number of militants equipped with light and heavy weaponry launched a coordinated attack on the district.

The anti-government armed militants have not commented regarding the report so far.

Khost has been among the relatively calm provinces in East of Afghanistan but the security situation of the province has started to deteriorate during the recent months amid ongoing efforts by the militants to expand their insurgency activities in eastern and southeastern provinces.
