China and Turkey have discussed Afghanistan’s reconstruction, regional security and efforts to promote stability, as both countries continue diplomatic engagement with Kabul without formally recognizing the Taliban authorities.
Yue Xiaoyong, China’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan Affairs, met with Cihad Erginay, Director General for South Asia at Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to exchange views on developments related to Afghanistan.
Yue said in a post on X that the two sides discussed regional security and stability as well as efforts aimed at the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan.
He added that China and Turkey highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to support Afghanistan’s reconstruction and contribute to broader regional stability.
The meeting comes as neighbouring and regional countries continue diplomatic efforts focused on Afghanistan’s economic recovery, security situation and humanitarian challenges following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
China has maintained economic and diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan, particularly in areas including trade, investment and infrastructure projects. Beijing has also called for stability in Afghanistan and greater regional cooperation, although it has not formally recognized the Taliban government.
Turkey has similarly maintained working relations with Taliban authorities and continued diplomatic contacts on issues including humanitarian assistance, trade and regional security, while stopping short of granting official recognition.
Afghanistan continues to face significant challenges, including a fragile economy, humanitarian needs, unemployment and ongoing security concerns.
The China-Turkey discussions reflect broader efforts by regional actors to shape engagement with Afghanistan while balancing security concerns, economic interests and humanitarian priorities.
