The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban announced the holding of the third session of the China-Afghanistan Liaison Mechanism for humanitarian assistance and economic reconstruction in Beijing, the capital of China.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the spokesperson of the Ministry, wrote on his social media platform X, on Thursday, April 18th, that this session was attended by political delegations from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Emphasis was placed on planning to accelerate the process of cooperation between China and Afghanistan, increasing the number of Chinese scholarships for Afghan students, and exploring the possibility of opening the Wakhan Corridor, among the main topics discussed in this session.

Yue Xiaoyong, China’s special representative for Afghanistan’s affairs, described this session as “very successful.”

Xiaoyong, also said that he has deemed the global community’s concerns regarding the formation of a comprehensive government in the country as “logical” and stated that the Taliban must be accountable for it.

This comes as the Taliban have responded negatively to the demands of citizens, their political opponents, and the global community over the past nearly three years regarding the establishment of an inclusive government and respect for human rights values. They have considered its regime comprehensive and emphasized that it is not amenable to Taliban values.

The Communication Mechanism sessions for humanitarian assistance and economic reconstruction are a series of meetings primarily aimed at coordinating economic and trade relations between Afghanistan and China (examining ways to enhance trade between Afghanistan and China).

The first session of this working group was held on December 31, 2021.
