At least 19 students were injured along with a security guard after a teenager armed with knives went on a rampage at a high school in the US State of Pennsylvania.

Dan Stevens, deputy emergency management coordinator for the Westmoreland County told reporters that the suspected attacker who is a 16-year-old student was in police custody.

Stevens said the victims are aged 14 to 17 and they were attacked in “numerous classrooms and hallways” of the school.

A spokesman for Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville Pennsylvania, Jesse Miller told Reuters that three of the patients were in surgery and all eight were listed in critical condition.

Chris Kauffman, director of trauma at Forbes Regional Hospital said all three undergoing surgery had been stabbed in the chest and abdomen.

According to reports, a building collapsed in New York city on Wednesday, leaving at least two people dead and 17 others injured.

The incident reportedly took place around 9 am following an explosion inside the building in Manhattan’s crowded East Harlem neighborhood.

East Harlem residents quoted by US media said they heard a blast in the six-storey apartment building before it caved in.

Television images showed heavy smoke and dust rising from the structure at East 114th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem.

A spokesman for New York Police Department told AFP news agency, “It was an explosion and a building collapsed.”

The FBI was on the scene as a precautionary measure, but there is no indication of terror or crime, authorities quoted by ABC news said.

American woman jailed for plot to kill cartoonist of prophet Muhammad

A former Pennsylvania resident was sentenced to 10 years in prison, for billing herself as “Jihad Jane” in online postings and participating in a failed al Qaeda-linked plot to murder a Swedish artist.

The 50-year-old, Colleen R LaRose had pleaded guilty to plotting to kill a Swedish illustrator who had created a cartoon offensive to many Muslims by ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad.

According to the Chief U.S. District Judge Petrese B. Tucker, LaRose faced a potential life term, but she was given credit for her guilty plea and her help in the indictment of two others.

In Monday’s hearing, LaRose apologized for blindly following the instructions of the jihadists, explaining that she had been “in a trance”.

LaRose posted a comment on YouTube under the name of “Jihad Jane” after the alleged terrorist conspiracy was launched in June 2008, in which she was “desperate to do something somehow to help” Muslims.

She was in contact with other conspirators from Southeast Asia and Europe in early 2009, where she expressed her desire to become a martyr for the Islamic cause.

Prosecutors said LaRose traveled to Europe in August 2009, after one of those conspirators told her in March 2009 that she must travel to Sweden to help accomplish the murder of cartoonist Lars Vilks.

Meanwhile, defense attorney Mark Wilson said presented his client during the trial as a single, vulnerable woman who was easily manipulated, and he alleged that her behavior could be due to the profound psychological traumas she suffered in childhood.

LaRose was reportedly raped by her biological father repeatedly, starting when she was only seven. The abuse continued until she ran away at the age of 13, according to her attorney.

In the meantime, the Swedish artist, Lars Vilks called the 10-year term too harsh, although he said he understands the need for deterrence. He remains under threat but has around-the-clock protection and said he feels safe.

“To lock her up for so many years seems like overkill to me,” Vilks told The Associated Press. “This is a person who has been through a lot of difficulties in her life and needs mental care more than anything else.”

The two other conspirators, Paulin-Ramirez and Maryland teen Mohammad Hassan Khalid, are scheduled to be sentenced this week in Philadelphia.

According to senior advisers at Whitehouse, President Obama is willing to extend the deadline on Kabul-Washington security agreement.

Obama is fully prepared to extend the U.S.-Afghanistan security deal in a concession to Afghan President Hamid Kazai aiming to approve BSA for legitimizing U.S. forces stay in the country beyond 2014.

Afghan president was persuaded through many different channels to sign the BSA before 31st December 2013 in order to allow U.S forces stay in Afghanistan post 2014.

Meanwhile, Afghan president Hamid Karzai has said he will not sign the agreement with Washington unless United States promises to end airstrikes and raids on homes, in addition to helping broker peace talks with the Taliban group in a bid to end the violence in the country.

This comes as most senior officials in Washington are supporting the full withdrawal of U.S. forces; however, some warn the 12 year achievements could reverse if the zero option is enforced.

Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari visited Kabul 3 weeks ago to discuss Kabul-Washington security deal and hinted that this agreement is to the best interest of Afghanistan.

He also shared the failed experience of the Iraqi government in negotiating a similar security deal with U.S back in 2011.

Obama’s Facebook and Twitter links hacked, claims Syrian hackers

According to reports, US president Barack Obama’s Facebook and Twitter accounts have been hacked by a group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army.

The group claimed on Tuesday that their hackers had taken control of US president Barack Obama’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

“Thanks to our operation, Twitter now blocks Obama’s dangerous propaganda links,” the Syrian group said in a Twitter message which was carried in a report by AFP.

The Syrian Electronic Army tweeted, “We accessed many Obama campaign emails (sic) accounts to assess his terrorism capabilities. They are quite high.”

The group, which backs Syria’s government and which has previously hacked accounts of The New York Times, Agence France-Presse and other media organizations, published screen shots which it said backed its claims.

Both accounts of US presidente Barack Obama appeared to be functioning normally some time after the claim. The White House officials have not commented in this regard.

The hack was likely accomplished by a phishing attack launched against members of Organizing for Action. A member of the SEA sent CNNMoney a screenshot of an organizer’s inbox confirming they had accessed her email. CNNMoney also received screenshots confirming their ability to re-direct links and access BarackObama.com.

A former US Army psychiatrist, Maj Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death by lethal injection for killing and injuring at least 45 US soldiers at an army base in Texas.

A military jury on Wednesday sentenced Maj Nidal Hasan to death pentaly over the 2009 shooting rampage at Foor Hood, which left at least 13 soldiers dead and 32 others ijured.

Maj Nidal Hasan said that the attack was carried out by himto protect the Taliban fighters from the troops who were about to be deploy to Afghanistan.

This will be the first US military service member to be executed since 1961. He will be executed after president Barack Obama authorises his execution, but due to the military justice system which requires a lengthy appeals process, years or even decades could pass before he is put to death.

Hasan, a U.S.-born Muslim, is accused of carrying out one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history by firing more than 100 rounds during a seven-minute shooting spree at the Army base in central Texas on Nov. 5, 2009.

He has admitted to carrying out the attack but was prohibited by military law from entering a guilty plea because military prosecutors were pursuing the death sentence.

The former undisputed American heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson claims he is “on the verge fo dyring” from ongoing drug and alcohol problems.

Tyson, 47 made the startling revelation while at a press conference to promote ESPN’s Friday Night Fights at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York on Friday.

‘I’m a bad guy sometimes,’ the ex-heavyweight boxing champion quoted by Daily Mail said. ‘I did a lot of bad things, and I want to be forgiven… I wanna change my life, I wanna live a different life now. I wanna live my sober life.

‘I don’t wanna die. I’m on the verge of dying, because I’m a vicious alcoholic.’

Tyson went on to say he had spent the last six days sober, a situation he described as “a miracle”. “I’ve been lying to everybody else that think I was sober, but I’m not. This is my sixth day. I’m never gonna use again,” he said.

According to reports, he has been in rehab three times and in 2012 said he had been sober for three years. Tyson said, he thought of killing himself five years ago. But the 2009 death of his daughter Exodus, four, who was strangled by a cord while playing on a treadmill, made him realise he must change.

He held the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight tiles at the age of 20 in 1987. However, he ive years later Brooklyn-born Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington and sentenced to six years in prison.

Tyrson retired from the sport in 2006, and was again sentenced to 24 hours in jail and 360 hours of community service for drug possession and driving under the influence. Currently, he is working as a boxing promoter.

Adam Gadahn, a US-born jihadi and Al Qaeda spokesperson has called on Muslims to attack US diplomats and embassies across the Arab world.

The senior militant, who is the subject of a $1 million bounty by the US government called on wealthy Muslims to offer financial rewards to killers of US nationals.

He appeared in a 39-minute recording posted on an Islamist forum, and translated by the SITE counter-terrorism monitoring group. He previously has praised the brutal murder of U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya last year.

“These prizes have a great effect in instilling fear in the hearts of our cowardly enemies. They also encourage hesitant individuals to carry out important and great deeds in the path of Allah,” Adam Gadahn said through the video message.

The statement by Adam Gadahn comes in the aftermath of a decision to close nearly two dozen American embassies across the Middle East and North Africa.

Gadahn up on a California goat farm, converted to Islam from his Jewish and Catholic roots. He rose to prominence following a series of speeches championing al-Qaida, and has previously called for attacks on US missions and diplomats.

He is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, and his statement is believed to be an attempt by Al Qaeda’s increasingly sidelined Pakistani branch to reassert its relevance.

US pulls staff from Lahore consulate due to specific threats

The U.S. Department of State evacuated all nonessential government personnel from it’s consulate in Lahore city of Pakistan and warned Americans not to travel to Pakistan.

A U.S. official said the Department of State ordered this drawdown due to specific threats concerning the U.S. consulate in Lahore.

The official further added that the move was not related to the threat of an Al Qaeda attack that prompted Washington to close temporarily 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and Africa.

The worshippers were gunned down as they left prayers for Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

This comes as a suicide bomber struck at a police funeral in the city on Thursday, killing 38 people in an attack claimed by the Taliban that will raise yet more concerns about the violence that has continued unabated since the newly-elected government took office.

The warning in Lahore, near Pakistan’s border with India, comes two days after Washington evacuated some diplomats from Yemen and told its nationals to leave that country immediately.

Nearly two dozen missions were shut by United States across the Middle East after a worldwide alert earlier this month. The Americans were warned that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

U.S. consulates have been attacked in Pakistan previously. At least four Pakistanis were killed following a car bomb and grenade attack on the U.S. consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar in 2010.

Thousands rally across United States over Zimmerman verdict

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in more than 100 cities across United States, a week week after George Zimmerman was cleared of murdering unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

The “Justice for Trayvon” protests were ornganized in at least 100 other cities across America, including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.

A Florida jury agreed that George Zimmerman, the man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter, and killed the 17-year-old in self-defence.

In a surprise appearance before reporters six days after the verdict, Obama spoke eloquently about Trayvon’s family showing grace in the aftermath of the verdict, and he reiterated his understanding of the pain the African-American community feels over the outcome of the trial and the larger problem of racial profiling.

“You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago,” Obama told reporters at the White House on Friday.

In the meantime the demonstrators urged federal charges to be brought against Mr Zimmerman, 29, over the February 2012 incident.

The National Action Network, headedby civil rights activist the Reverend Al Sharpton led the protests agains the court’s decision. “We are not coming out with violence, we are coming to denounce violence. The violence that was perpetrated on an unarmed, innocent man named Trayvon Martin,” Mr Sharpton quoted by BBC while speaking at a rally in New York.

Mr. Shapton urged that he wanted to see the scrapping of “stand your ground” self-defence laws, such as that in force in Florida. “We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,” he said.

The teenager’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, told the crowd: “Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours.”

Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law claims abuse, torture at US hands

A former spokesman for al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law Suleiman Abu Ghaith claimed in court papers Friday that he was tortured by the U.S. and asked a judge to dismiss the terrorism case against him, The Associated Press reported.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith’s attorneys said in papers in Manhattan federal court that their client is charged in a flawed document that fails to adequately explain how he was part of a conspiracy to kill Americans.

Stanley Cohen, a New York lawyer who is representing Abu Ghaith said he was victim of “an absolute rendition … an extrajudicial rendition.”

Abu Ghaith, 47, has been held without bail since he was brought to the United States in March to face charges that he conspired against Americans in his role as al-Qaida’s spokesman after the Sept. 11 attacks.

According to the authorities Abu Ghaith had appeared in propaganda videos that warned of further assaults against the United States as devastating as the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that killed nearly 3,000 people.

He is one of the highest-ranking al Qaeda figures to face U.S. criminal charges for crimes related to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Abu Ghaith confirmed in a court affidavit filed on Friday that he fled to Iran after the attacks, hwere he was arrested in mid-2002. He claims that he was subject to periodic interrogation by Iranian authorities and was advised by them that US government was aware he was in their custody.

He also added that he was arrested by Turkish authorities after being freed by Iranian authorities, and was put on a plane after about 45 days of interrogation in Ankara. He was handcuffed and hooded by Jordian police and handed over to a group of people who he believed included Americans after his plane landed in Amman despite he was told that he would flown to Kuwait.

He said he was interrogated over the next 13 hours with a few breaks in a cold plane and was kept naked on the plane for several minutes as a man in military clothing photographed his body.

Abu Ghaith also said he was only given a small bottle of water and one orange to eat. He said he soiled his clothing and feet and urinated on the floor when he tried to relieve himself in the plane’s restroom while handcuffed as a soldier watched.

US president Barack Obama following a speech on Thursday defended the use of drones and said that United States is safer from terrorism because of his administration’s efforts.

Obama is expected to offer some transparency over the drone strike during his speech on counter-terrorism.

His speech to defend drone strikes comes a dy after US officials for the first time publicly confirmed that four US citizens were killed in drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan.

According to White House officials Obama’s speech coincides with the signing of new “presidential policy guidance” on when the U.S. can use drone strikes

In parts of his speech president Obama will also be lifting lifting a moratorium on transferring prisoners to Yemen, long a volatile land but now ruled by a government regarded as a “willing and able partner,” an official said.

“He’ll reiterate his call for the closure of Gitmo,” one of the officials quoted by CNN said.

The facility, established after the September 11 attacks against the United States, has come under criticism because of its growing cost and a reputation as counterproductive to winning hearts and minds in fighting terror.

At least 51 people, including 20 children were killed following a deadly tornado which torn through an Oklahoma City suburb.

Dozens more were injured after the storm destroyed entire blocks of homes and trapped dozens of school children beneath debris.

The hardest hit area was the suburb of Moore, home to 55,000 people, where a primary school with children sheltering inside was razed.

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma and ordered he federal authorities to join in the search and recovery efforts which are continuing throughout the night.

According to authorities many remained trapped even as rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris-clogged streets to the devastated suburb of Moore, where much of the damage occurred.

In the meantime spokeswoman for the Oklahoma city medical examiner, Am Elliott quoted by New York Times said, at least 91 people had died, including the children, and officials said that toll was likely to climb.

Hospitals reported at least 145 people injured, 70 of them children.

Tornadoes, hail and high winds also hit Iowa and Kansas, part of a storm system stretching from Texas to Minnesota.

The National Weather Service said the probability of more tornados was high as the storm made its way east, forecasting severe weather in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.

According to U.S. authorities, two commuter trains serving the US city of New York have collided in Connecticut state during evening rush hour, injuring at least 60 people.

The national railroad authorities said, the collision of the two Metro North trains near the suburb of Fairfied forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

In the meantime police officials said, five people were critically injured and 60 people were transported to area hospitals.

Conn., Gov. Dan Malloy quoted by NBC news said, around 60 people were transported to area hospitals, most of them with only minor injuries. Five, however, were critically injured, one of them very critically.

Metro North is a commuter railroad serving the northern suburbs of New York City. It is operated by the MTA, a New York State agency. Fairfield is about 80 km north of New York City.

The number of injured could rise because hospital officials were told to prepare to receive up to 180 patients total. Metro North trains can carry up to 300 passengers when full.

Canadian police foil terrorist attack against a passener train

According to police officials, two men were arrested and charged with plotting a terrorist attack against a Canadian passenger train with support from al-Qaeda “elements” in Iran.

Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, were allegedly planning to carry out an attack on a Via Rail passenger train, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) told a press conference.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police official James Malizia told reporters, “Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured.”

He said, two suspects had received “direction and guidance” from “Al Qaeda elements living in Iran,” but that there was no evidence that the effort had been sponsored by the government of Iran.

The arrests come one week after the twin bombings at the Boston Marathon killed three people and wounded 200, and as Canada’s parliament debates a proposal to beef up anti-terror laws, including criminalizing the travel of Canadians abroad in order to participate in an attack.

However a U.S. Justice Department official in Washington said, there is no connection between the Canadian terrorist plot and the Boston Marathon bombings.

According to police officials, the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has been arrested, following gunfire and explosions.

The officials also added, at least three more people have been taken into custody for questioning at a housing complex where the suspect may have lived.

A massive manhunt was launched by police on Friday to search Dzhokhor Tsarnaev after one of the suspect was shot dead by police during a car chase and gun battle overnight.

Locals were ordered to stay indoors as US police officers went door-to-door searching for the suspect after thousands f officers swarmed the streets in a manhunt that had the Massachusetts town of Watertown in lockdown.

Tsarnaev was captured after a neighbour alerted police after finding him ”covered with blood” in a boat where he had taken refuge, Boston police chief Ed Davis told reporters.

President Barack Obama Friday night praised law enforcers and Bostonians after the massive manhunt that led to the capture of the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

He also gave a special mention to 26-year-old MIT police Officer Sean Collier, who was killed in the line of duty Thursday night.

Police kill one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects

One Boston marathon bombing suspect has been shot dead and another is on the loose believed to be “armed and dangerous”, police have said.

The police officials further added, the first suspect in the Boston marathon bombings, who was shot in a confrontation with police early Friday, was in cardiac arrest by the time he reached Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Doctors labored to save him without success, the hospital said in a news briefing. He had multiple gunshot wounds and what appeared to be blast injuries, said Dr. Richard Wolfe, chief of emergency medicine.

A national security official identified the hunted man as Dzhokar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and said the dead suspect was his brother, Tamerlan Tsarneav, 26. The brothers had been in the United States for several years.

Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News that authorities are investigating whether Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., and his brother may have had military training overseas.

The two men believed to be the suspects from Monday’s terror attack apparently surfaced just hours after the FBI released their imaged late Thursday afternoon, shooting the police officer, robbing a convenience store, carjacking a man who later escaped and engaging in a wild shootout with Boston police, in which they hurled explosives from their stolen car.

All public transport remains suspended in Boston – and all streets and businesses in Watertown locked down – as a major manhunt continues for the suspect who got away.

According to officials, dozens of people were wounded and a local middle school along with a nursing home were damaged following a massive fire and explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant outside of Waco.

The blast was reported at about 8pm (1am GMT on Thursday) in West, a town of 2,700 people about 80 miles (130km) south of Dallas and 20 miles (32km) north of Waco.

Images posted by The Dallas Morning News showed numerous ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles tending to groups of people huddled in blankets and on stretchers under the floodlights.

Local hospitals reported treating slightly more than 120 people injured by the West, Texas, blasts.

However, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Gail Scarborough said earlier that 200 people were injured near the plant, 40 of them critically.

Highly toxic material suspected in letter sent to Obama

US Secret Service officials on Wednesday said, a letter addressed to President Obama, containing a suspicious substance, was intercepted at a screening facility outside the White House.

The letter to Obama was intercepted at an off-site White House mail facility and was being tested further, the FBI said. A federal law enforcement official said that the letter was “very similar” to one addressed to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.

Both letters arrived Tuesday at off-site postal facilities set up after the 2001 anthrax attacks and have been sent to laboratories for additional tests, authorities said.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said, “A letter addressed to the president containing a suspicious substance was received at the remote White House mail screening facility.”

This comes as Washington was on heightened alert in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings Monday, although there was no indication the letters or suspicious packages were related to the Boston events.

White House spokesman Jay Carney also said the president was briefed on the suspicious letters Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning.

American Muslims fear backlash for Islamists link in Boston blasts

US Muslims are watching closely as the probe into the Boston bombings unfolds, fearing a backlash like after 9/11 if an Islamist link is confirmed to the deadly attack.

Muslim activists in the U.S. also began sending out a slew of news releases, tweets and Facebook messages urging prayers and aid for the victims — and condemning whoever was behind the horrific attack.

Executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations following a statement said, “American Muslims, like Americans of all backgrounds, condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s cowardly bomb attack on participants and spectators of the Boston Marathon.”

Awad following the statement further added, “We also call for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. All of us as Americans to work together to bring those responsible to justice.”

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood following a statement also condemned the Boston Marathon bombings Tuesday, but a senior member of the group painted them as part of a conspiracy aimed at undermining Muslims’ moves toward democracy.

This comes as a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Ibrahim Hooper, said the Muslim group had already received “the usual hate calls,” but nothing major as yet — and underlined its main message was condemnation.

Ibrahim Hooper quoted by AFP said, “You don’t want to create the impression that you’re more concerned about vandalism at a mosque, or something like that, than you are about a violent attack that takes the lives of individuals and injures many more.”

But he told AFP, “In any of these cases that’s something that’s in the back of our mind, that there’s a possibility of a backlash. We’ll just have to see how the investigation develops.”

The number of FBI-designated hate crimes against Muslims and Arabs in America shot up dramatically after the September 11, 2001 attacks, which were quickly attributed to Al-Qaeda and a team of mostly Saudi hijackers.

According to reports the Boston Marathon headquarters has been locked down after an explosion was reported near the finish line.

The explosions reportedly took place inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel. The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

Marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos while local television also showed ambulances at the scene.

A White House official quoted by New York Times said, “The president has been notified of the incident in Boston. His administration is in contact with state and local authorities. He directed his administration to provide whatever assistance is necessary in the investigation and response.”

In the meantime Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick confirmed reports at least 3 people were killed and more than 100 people had been injured, some gravely.

He said Boston would be “open” on Tuesday but that there would be “a heightened law enforcement presence”.

Police officials earlier said at least 2 people have been killed and 22 others were injured following the blasts.

The blasts shattered the carnival atmosphere of one of the biggest sporting events in the US, causing panic and confusion.

Scientists getting closer to grow artificial kidney in labortory

Scientists have grown a kidney in a laboratory and shown that it works when implanted into a living animal. The work is an important step towards the longer-term goal of growing personalised replacement organs that could be transplanted into people with kidney failure.

Researchers created the synthetic kidney using a similar bioengineering process to the one that led to the manufacture of artificial human windpipes, the first of which was transplanted into a Spanish woman with a collapsed trachea in 2008.

According to research published in Nature Medicine journal on Sunday, the kidney, grown in a lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and transplanted into a rat, produces urine and functions properly.

To make the kidney, the researchers first removed kidneys from rats and treated them with a detergent solution that stripped all living cells from the organ, leaving only a scaffold of fibrous proteins.

Then, the researchers built a new kidney around the scaffold, using human umbilical cord cells and kidney cells from newborn rats.

Dr Ott, who has already grown a beating heart in his laboratory, said: ‘If this can be scaled to human-sized grafts, patients suffering from renal failure could theoretically receive new organs derived from their own cells.’

Researchers now plan to attempt the experiment on pigs as an intermediary step to research on humans.

Ex-CIA chief interviewed by FBI over secret files scandal

According to reports FBI agents met with former CIA Director David Petraeus at his northern Virginia home as part of an investigation into whether an ex-lover improperly handled classified documents.

Former CIA chief David Petraeus resigned in November after it emerged that he had had an extra-marital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, an Army reserve intelligence officer who is also married.

He stepped down in November as head of the spy agency after admitting to an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell. The move ended a storied career marked by his tenure as military commander in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A federal law enforcement official quoted by USA Today said, the interview at Petraeus’s home in northern Virginia just outside Washington was part of an ongoing investigation into whether Broadwell had received classified information or whether such files were kept at an unauthorized location.

The official further added the investigation is taking considerable time to complete.

Jacqueline Maguir FBI spokeswoman told AFP that agents conducted “law enforcement activity” in northern Virginia. The bureau would not provide any further details on the matter.

In the meantime Petraeus and Broadwell have separately told investigators they did not share security secrets.

Petraeus was credited with helping pull Iraq from the brink of all-out civil war as commander there and President Barack Obama turned to him to lead U.S. forces in Afghanistan before moving to him to the CIA in 2011.

Obama apologizes for his remarks on California’s Kamala Harris

President Barack Obama has apologised to the California attorney general for remarking on her appearance at a fundraising event on Thursday.

Obama called Harris last night to “apologise” for both his “remarks” and the “distraction” that it caused for one of the brilliant attorney generals of the country, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

At the fundraiser, Obama said Harris was “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country” and referred to her as “brilliant”, “dedicated”, “tough” and “exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law”.

But Critics cited the remark as an example of the ongoing hurdles women face in the workplace.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, usually an Obama-friendly zone, the president came in for some criticism over his comment the day before at a fundraiser near San Francisco for the Democratic National Committee.

“I’m sure he meant to pay her a compliment … but quite frankly, it just divides women and it just divides people up to separate them by looks and probably was a little ham-fisted,” said host Mika Brzezinski. “I think he made a mistake.”

In the meatnime White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said,

The president did speak with Attorney General Harris last night after he came back from his trip, and he called her to apologise for the distraction created by his comments. And you know, they are old friends and good friends, and he did not want in any way to diminish the Attorney General’s professional accomplishments and her capabilities.”

American police officer convicted of plot to kidnap, eat women

A New York City police officer was convicted Tuesday of charges he plotted to kidnap and cook women to dine on their “girl meat”.

However New York police officer Gilberto Valle’s lawyers argued the former police officer’s e-mails and online postings were just “fantasy role-play” and”dark improv theater,” but prosecutors said he was “deadly serious.”

A federal jury decided Valle conspired to kidnap women, who prosecutors argued he planned to rape, torture, cook and eat.

Prosecutors said Valle – dubbed the “cannibal cop” by the tabloid media – crossed the line from fantasy to reality in taking specific action conspiring to kidnap women.

A document found on his wife’s laptop was titled “Abducting and Cooking Kimberly — A Blueprint.” It included a photograph of Kimberly Sauer and personal information, including her bra size and shoe size.

Valle faces up to life in prison on the charge of conspiracy to kidnap and up to five years in prison for the database breach but his defense attorney, Julia Gatto, countered that her client was merely engaged in fantasy role-play online.

The trial opened a window on strange online underworld where people share sick and twisted fantasies of torture, murder, dismemberment and cannibalism.

The FBI and CIA helped capture an alleged Al Qaeda spokesman who was Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law and have flown him to New York City to face numerous terrorism-related charges, according to U.S. officials.

Prosecutors unsealed an indictment against a son-in-law of Osama bin Laden on Thursday that charged him with conspiracy to kill Americans.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, has been “cooperating” and has already revealed “key intelligence” about the current status, personnel and finances of al Qaeda even before he was secretly spirited to New York City, U.S. officials told ABC News.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said, “It is huge. This is a man who is in the inner circle of bin Laden’s al Qaeda operations and now we have him alive and he’s talking.”

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, 47, a former spokesman for the al Qaeda terrorist network, was seized by U.S. authorities in Jordan within the past week.

Abu Ghaith gained worldwide notoriety in widely circulated videos after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the terrorist network spokesman was involved in plotting the 9/11 attacks.

He is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate in New York City on Friday and faces charges including conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals.

US senate confirm Chuck Hagel as defense secretary

The US senate on Tuesday voted to confirm Chuck Hagel as president Barack Obama’s next secretary of defense after one of the lengthiest and most bitter confirmation fights in recent history.

Leon Panetta will now be replaced as head of the Pentagon by the Republican former senator from Nebraska and decorated Vietnam veteran.

This comes as America is seeking to draw down its ground forces in Afghanistan but ramping up its controversial drone warfare across the globe. He is also taking the reigns at the exact moment a fierce budgetary fight is raging in Washington over looming spending cuts, including to large swathes of the military. Defence chiefs have been warning that the planned cuts have already caused delayed deployments of manpower.

Just four Republicans crossed the political divide to back Hagel as he won a 58 to 41 vote in America’s upper chamber. They were Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Mike Johanns of Nebraska, Richard Shelby from Alabama and, surprisingly, Tea Party favourite Rand Paul from Kentucky, who had been one of Hagel’s staunchest critics.

Hagel was fiercely opposed by many Republicans who angered party leaders when he criticised former President George W Bush’s handling of the Iraq war.

A number of the senators also raised questions about whether Hagel is sufficiently supportive of Israel or tough enough on Iran. However Hagel was fully supported by democrats.

Facebook become target of sophisticated hacking group

Facebook Inc said on Friday hackers had infiltrated some of its employees’ laptops in recent weeks, making the world’s No.1 social network the latest victim of a wave of cyber attacks, many of which have been traced to China.

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.

The news didn’t seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc.’s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday’s extended trading.

“As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day,” Facebook said.

It was not immediately clear why Facebook waited until now to announce the incident. Facebook declined to comment on the reason or the origin of the attack.

Facebook’s announcement follows recent cyber attacks on other prominent websites. Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have said they have also been infiltrated. Those attacks were attributed by the news organisations to Chinese hackers targeting their coverage of China.

US senate confirm John Kerry as next secretary of state

John Kerry’s nomination as President Barack Obama’s new secretary of state sailed through the US Senate on Tuesday, as his fellow senators voted overwhelmingly to confirm him to replace Hillary Clinton as the country’s top diplomat.

The Senate voted 94-3 on Tuesday in favour of Kerry, after the chamber’s Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination earlier in the day.

Voting against Kerry’s nomination were Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and Texas Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.

The Senate’s approval sets in motion a special election for Kerry’s Massachusetts Senate seat. The five-term senator and losing presidential candidate in 2004 is expected to be sworn later this week.

Senator Robert Menendez, chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, said before the roll call that a heavy vote for Kerry would send a “strong message” to the rest of the world that he had the firm backing of the entire United States.

Kerry voted “present,” in the vote for his promotion. Kerry will take office in the shadow left by outgoing Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, who was praised by President Obama as “one of the finest secretary of states we’ve had,” on the TV show “60 Minutes” earlier this week.

Hillary Clinton, 65, is expected to leave her post on Friday, amid swirling speculation about whether she will run for the presidency in 2016. For now, she has said only that she is looking forward to some rest after four gruelling years.

Barack Obama sworn in as US president for second term

President Barack Obama is officially sworn-in by Chief Justice John Roberts in the Blue Room of the White House during the 57th Presidential Inauguration in Washington, Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013.

The public swearing-in for President Obama takes place Monday morning but the unofficial celebration in Washington is already in full swing — from a children’s concert for military families to flag-lined streets to bustling crowds in the hip U Street neighborhood.

Monday’s centrepiece, a midday inaugural address from the western steps of the U.S. Capitol, affords Obama 20 minutes to lay out a vision for the next four years.

With his left hand on a bible that has been in his wife’s family since 1958, Obama swore to “faifthfully execute the office” and to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution”, the New York Daily News reported.

“Good job, daddy,” Sasha said. “I did it” the President whispered as he hugged her.

“You didn’t mess up,” she answered, and amid laughter, the First Family filed out of the Blue Room.

After Monday’s presidential luncheon at the Capitol, the Obamas and Bidens will parade along Pennsylvania Ave. to the White House, a procession that stars the Canadian Embassy in a supporting role, with 2,000 invited guests enjoying unique views.

Chicago murders death toll top Afghanistan casualties

The death toll by murder in Chicago over the past decade is greater than the number of American forces who have died in Afghanistan since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to a police analysis.

While 144 Americans have died in Afghanistan in 2012, a whopping 228 Chicago residents have been killed, and the murder rate is up a staggering 35 percent from last year. That’s a rash of homicides quadruple the rate of New York City’s, and police and crime experts fear it may only get worse, according to The Daily.

As Obama announced Wednesday a $500 million package of executive actions and legislative proposals aimed at reducing gun violence, he nodded to the city’s murder rate while pointing to several recent massacres, including the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Chicago’s mayor says he is working on an ordinance that would restrict guns more tightly in Chicago after a year when the city saw more than 500 homicides.

In addition, police reports in Chicago – where President Obama once worked as a community organizer and where his former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, now serves as mayor – show most of the city’s massive murder mayhem is black-on-black crime.

A WND review of the Chicago Police Department Murder Analysis reports from 2003 to 2011 provides a statistical breakdown of the demographics of both the victims and offenders in the 4,265 murders in Chicago over that time period.

Of the victims of murder in Chicago from 2003 to 2011, an average of 77 percent had a prior arrest history, with a high of 79 percent of the 436 murdered in Chicago in 2010 having arrest histories.

For the same 2003-2011 period, blacks were the victims of 75 percent of 4,265 murders. Blacks also were the offenders in 75 percent of the murders.

According to 2010 U.S. Census information, Chicago has a population of 2,695,598 people. The city is 33 percent black, 32 percent white (not Hispanic), and 30 percent Hispanic or Latino in origin.

World doesn’t ended while Mayan calendar ends

Dec. 21 started out as the prophetic day some had believed would usher in the fiery end of the world. By Friday afternoon, it had become more comic than cosmic, the punch line of countless Facebook posts and at least several dozen T-shirts.

Late Thursday, a ceremony was held in northern Guatemala at an ancient Mayan temple marking the end of a period known as the 13th Baktun.

Thousands of mystics, hippies and tourists celebrated on Friday as the Earth survived a day billed by doomsday theorists as the end of the world and a new era began for the Maya people.

The doomsayers who had predicted apocalypse were nowhere to be seen. Instead, people showed up in T-shirts reading “The End of the World: I Was There.”

In Taiwan, a countdown to the end of days was held near a replica of a Mayan pyramid. Events were also held in other Central and South American nations where remnants of the Mayan culture persist.

For the masses in the ruins, Dec. 21 sparked celebration of what they saw as the birth of a new and better age. It was also inspiration for massive clouds of patchouli and marijuana smoke and a chorus of conch calls at the break of dawn.

The official crowd count stood at 20,000 as of mid-afternoon, with people continuing to arrive. That surpassed the count on an average day but not as many as have gathered at the ruins during equinoxes.

In the 1960s, US scholars said the end of the Maya’s 13th Baktun, an epoch lasting some 400 years, could signify an Armageddon – a theory debunked by experts.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he is donating nearly $500 million in stock to a Silicon Valley charity to focus on health and education issues.

In a note on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg wrote that he and his wife Priscilla have signed the so-called Giving Pledge, a philanthropy effort aimed at the wealthy and launched by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett a couple of years ago. The pledge involves promising to give away at least half of one’s fortune during his or her lifetime.

Zuckerberg, whose stake in vested Facebook shares is worth roughly $11 billion, announced plans in 2010 to give a $100 million gift to the beleaguered public schools of Newark, New Jersey.

Later in 2010, he joined Giving Pledge, an effort led by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett to get the richest Americans to donate most of their wealth.

While he’s already donated funds to public schools in Newark, N.J., Zuckerberg wrote that the new donation to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation will “lay the foundation for new projects.” In particular, he writes that “together, we will look for areas in education and health to focus on next.”

Zuckerberg founded Facebook in his Harvard dorm room in 2004, turning it into the world’s most popular online social network with roughly 1 billion users. With its high-profile initial public offering in May, Facebook became the first U.S. technology company to debut with a $100 billion-plus valuation, though questions about its long-term money-making prospects have pressured share prices.

At least 27 people have died, including 18 children, after a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, US officials said tonight.

The shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, which is in the western part of Connecticut, on Friday morning.

Horrifying stories were emanating from the small rural school and the White House was being briefed on the full extent of the mass shooting at the school in a town about 50 miles north east of New York City.

The suspected shooter, the father of a student there, was also killed, CBS News reported. The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said.

The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said. There were unconfirmed reports of a second shooter after witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots fired.

It wasn’t clear how many people were injured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

State police said Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m. A SWAT team was among the throngs of police to respond.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade – roughly ages 5 to 10.”It was horrendous,” said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade.”Everyone was in hysterics – parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied.

Hurricane Sandy: US Braces for Dangerous Superstorm

Hurricane Sandy, which could become the largest storm ever to hit the United States, is set to bring much of the East Coast, including New York and Washington, to a virtual standstill in the next few days with battering winds, flooding and the risk of widespread power outages.

From Washington to Boston, big cities and small towns Sunday buttoned up against the onslaught of a superstorm that could endanger 50 million people in the most heavily populated corridor in the country, with forecasters warning that the New York area could get the worst of it — an 11-foot wall of water.

As of 8 a.m. ET, the storm was about 260 miles (420 km) southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and about 395 miles ( 636 km) from New York City, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km). Sandy was moving at a speed of 10 miles (16 km) per hour, and is expected to move parallel along the Southeast coast Sunday, approaching the mid-Atlantic coast by Monday night.

The decision, made late Sunday night, leaves the American stock markets closed for weather conditions for the first time in nearly three decades. The New York Stock Exchange had previously planned on closing only its physical trading floor, while allowing for trading on its Arca electronic exchange. It has now decided to halt all trading.

The Nasdaq and BATS stock markets, which are built on electronic trading, also decided to close. The CME Group, which operates the Nymex commodities exchange, said that it would halt trading on its physical commodities floor and on its electronic stock futures and options exchanges.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, or Sifma, said in an e-mailed statement that it was calling for bond trading, which is all done electronically, to close at noon Monday, though it left the final decision to member firms.

Airlines canceled more than 7,200 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains and said schools would be closed on Monday. Boston also called off school. And all non-essential government offices closed in the nation’s capital.

Worried residents in the hurricane’s path packed stores, searching for generators, flashlights, batteries, food and other supplies in anticipation of power outages. Nearly 284,000 residential properties valued at $88 billion are at risk for damage, risk analysts at CoreLogic said.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday afternoon called on residents and visitors at East Coast to get prepared for “a serious and big storm” and follow the instructions of state and local authorities as Hurricane Sandy is approaching.

Hugo Chavez wins another six-year term in Venezuela

President Hugo Chavez won re-election Sunday, defeating challenger Henrique Capriles and gaining six more years to cement his legacy and press ahead with his crusade for socialism in Venezuela.

Chavez, who spent heavily in the months before the vote, defeated his challenger Henrique Capriles by a margin of over 10% votes.

His rival, 40-year-old Miranda state governor Henrique Capriles, was gracious in defeat, saying, “I accept and respect the decision of the people,” but it was a bitter pill for the opposition and many in the divided country to swallow.

Chavez will now have a freer hand to push for an even bigger state role in the economy and continue populist programs. He’s also likely to further limit dissent and deepen friendships with U.S. rivals.

Chavez won this re-election for the third time in last 14 years in office although he had won by a larger margin in last election in 2006 when he had won 63 percent of the votes.

Hundreds of Chavez supporters assembled before the announcement in front of the Miraflores presidential palace, setting off firecrackers, honking horns and holding signs as his campaign song blared.

First man to walk on the moon Neil Arstrong dies at 82

U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, who took a giant leap for mankind when he became the first person to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.

Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made “one giant leap for mankind” with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died.

Armstrong died following complications from cardiovascular procedures, his family announced Saturday.

When he made that famous step on July 20, 1969, he uttered a phrase that has been carved in stone and quoted across the planet: “That’s one small step for [a] man; one giant leap for mankind.”

The Apollo 11 astronauts’ euphoric moonwalk provided Americans with a sense of achievement in the space race with Cold War foe the Soviet Union and while Washington was engaged in a bloody war with the communists in Vietnam.

Neil Alden Armstrong was 38 years old at the time and even though he had fulfilled one of mankind’s age-old quests that placed him at the pinnacle of human achievement, he did not revel in his accomplishment. He even seemed frustrated by the acclaim it brought.

Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on his grandfather’s farm near Wapakoneta, Ohio.

His father, Stephen Armstrong, was a civil servant who audited county records in Ohio and later served as assistant director of the Ohio Mental Hygiene and Corrections Department. The family of his mother, Viola, owned the farm.

Former US ambassador to Afghanistan arrested for DUI

Former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker is facing hit-and-run and drunken driving charges in Washington state after striking a semi-truck when he tried to make a right turn from the left lane, authorities said Thursday.

Crocker, who was driving a 2009 Ford Mustang convertible, was stopped in the left lane at a red light. And when the light turned green, he tried to turn right across the path of the semi in the right lane, Washington State Patrol Trooper Troy Briggs said.

The vehicles collided and Crocker’s car spun out, but he kept driving, Briggs said. A witness followed him to a nearby bank and called police.

“He was very cooperative but obviously intoxicated,” Briggs said.

The 63-year-old Spokane native registered a .160 blood-alcohol content twice the legal limit — and a .152 in successive breath tests when was arrested Aug. 14 in Spokane Valley, Washington State Patrol Trooper Troy Briggs said.

Crocker who in 2009 received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the top civilian honor bestowed in the United States, and until last month was his nation’s ambassador to Afghanistan was arrested August 14 in Spokane, Washington, a case docket provided by the Spokane County prosecutor’s office showed.

Crocker pleaded not guilty in court the next day. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 12.

Crocker is a career diplomat who has spent the past 30 years in the Middle East.

In 1983, he was a diplomat serving in Lebanon when the American embassy in Beirut was hit by a truck laden with explosives, killing 63 people, including 17 Americans.

US withdraws supply route negotiators from Pakistan

Pentagon officials on Monday announced United States is withdrawing its team of negotiators from Pakistan without securing a long-sought deal with Islamabad to allow trucks to again supply NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

“Our team is coming home for what we hope is a short period of time,” Little told Pentagon reporters.

The team of negotiators had been in Pakistan for about six weeks, he said, as US officials had believed they were close to a deal with Islamabad to lift the blockade on Nato convoys.

Little also said a senior Defense Department official, Peter Lavoy, talked to senior Pakistani officials over the weekend but was not allowed to meet with Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the Pakistani army.

The routes were closed last November by Pakistan in retaliation for a U.S. air assault that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. The border crossings had been an important means of getting U.S. war materiel into Afghanistan.

The supply-route deal with Pakistan has proven elusive due to Islamabad’s demands for more money and Washington’s refusal to apologize for accidentally killing Pakistani forces.

However Little acknowledged that securing a deal with Pakistan remained a priority and said the team of negotiators could return at any moment.

US panel votes to cut foreignو military aid to Pakistan

A top American Senator has warned Pakistan that the US would have no other option but to resort to “self-help” if Islamabad does not become more cooperative in the war against terrorism.

This comes as a House panel on Wednesday moved to cut the foreign aid budget by some 9 percent, targeting economic aid and contributions to the United Nations and the World Bank.

Kerry said in his remarks at a Congressional hearing, “I personally think it is simply unacceptable to have a zone of immunity for acts of war against armed forces and against the collective community that has tried to accomplish what it has tried to accomplish.”

In a move that could affect the US-Pakistan ties further, a House panel on Wednesday moved to block the USD 800 million aid that was requested for a special fund for training and equipping Pakistan’s military in counterinsurgency tactics.

The panel maintains aid to Israel and Egypt at the administration’s requests but denies $800 million that was requested for a special fund for training and equipping Pakistan’s military in counterinsurgency tactics. The move appears to reflect wariness on the part of lawmakers toward the government of Pakistan, which failed to find Osama bin Laden for years until the U.S. military killed him a year ago.

House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member, Adam Smith said, “The bill places appropriate conditions on aid to Pakistan. It is imperative that Pakistan support our counterterrorism efforts and work to prevent the interdiction of improvised explosive devices to Afghanistan.”

The bill also prohibits the preferential procurement of goods or services from Pakistan until Islamabad re-opens the crucial NATO supply routes to Afghanistan, which were closed in the aftermath of the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers on November 26 in a NATO cross border fire.

Al-Qaeda’s Yemen underwear bomber was CIA agent

The man chosen by al Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen to blow up a US-bound airliner was a double agent who infiltrated the group and volunteered to carry out the suicide attack, US and Yemeni officials say.

The secret operative — working for CIA and Saudi intelligence handlers in Yemen — provided the U.S. with key information on a nearly undetectable bomb that al-Qaeda hoped would destroy a plane and usher in a new era of terror, the Associated Press reported.

The FBI is still analysing the explosive, which was intended to be concealed in a passenger’s underwear. Officials said it was an upgrade over the bomb that failed to detonate on board an airplane over Detroit in 2009.

In the meantime a senior US official told the New York Times that a bomb for the attack was sewn into “custom fit” underwear that would have been difficult to detect even in a careful pat-down at an airport.

“Initial exploitation indicates that the device is very similar to IEDs that have been used previously by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in attempted terrorist attacks, including against aircraft and for targeted assassinations,” it said in a statement.

A Department of Homeland Security official said that because the device was similar to the one in the failed 2009 attempt, security steps taken since “would have been able to prevent this device from bringing down an airplane”.

Al-Qaida has repeatedly tried to take advantage of overseas gaps in airport security. The 2009 bomb attempt originated in Amsterdam, where the bomber did not receive a full-body scan. And in 2010, terrorists smuggled bombs onto cargo jets, which receive less scrutiny than passenger planes.

US drone killings legal to combat threats – White House

The U.S. campaign of drone strikes to kill militants in other countries is legal under international law, President Barack Obama’s counterterrorism adviser insisted on Monday in a rare public admission and justification of the controversial tactic.

The US drone programme, operated by its spy agency, the Central Investigation Agency (CIA), has reportedly killed 2,200 people in Pakistan (August 2011 tally), including 168 children among at least 385 civilians and non-combatants. It has been a source of public anger and last month, in its US policy review, Pakistan decided to ask US to stop the attacks.

White House counter terrorism adviser John Brennan said drone strikes are legal and ethical against al-Qaeda forces, which he described as “legitimate military targets” in armed conflict against the U.S.

Marking the anniversary of the killing of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden by U.S. forces in Pakistan, Brennan said the strikes are used only in cases of a “significant threat.”

“I’m here today because President Obama has instructed us to be more open with the American people about these efforts,” Brennan said in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a Washington think tank.

“These targeted strikes are legal,” he said, citing legal opinions from the administration, the U.S. Constitution and the Authorization for Use of Military Force passed by Congress after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In the meantime some of the documents seized Navy SEALs at the bin Laden compound will be made public online this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, he said. In one, Brennan said, bin Laden expressed concern about “the rise of lower leaders who are not as experienced and this would lead to the repeat of mistakes.”‎

Obama seeks probe of Afghan body abuse by US troops

President Barack Obama wants an investigation into photographs that have surfaced of US soldiers posing with the maimed corpses of Afghan insurgents and says those responsible should be held accountable, the White House said on Wednesday.

Although the photos, published in the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, were two years old, they appear at a sensitive time, following a Koran-burning incident that led to widespread riots in Afghanistan and the deaths of several American soldiers.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said, “The conduct depicted in those photographs is reprehensible and does not in any way represent the high standards of the U.S. military.”

Carney also said, “The president certainly shares in the Defense secretary’s opinion that this should be investigated and those held responsible will be held accountable.”

r Carney also expressed disappointment that the Times published the photos.

It comes at a particularly sensitive time for US-Afghan relations, after a series of incidents – including the murder of 17 Afghan civilians in March – stirred up anti-Western sentiment. Nato combat troops aim to leave Afghanistan in 2014.

NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan, US General John Allen, said an investigation was under way, and US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta apologized “on behalf of the Department of Defense and the US government.

“The president certainly shares the defense secretary’s opinion that this needs to be investigated, will be investigated and that those responsible will be held accountable,” Carney said.

The 100th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the iconic passenger liner Titanic will be remembered in ceremonies across the world Sunday, with descendants of the victims leading the tributes.

In the birthplace of the Titanic, residents gathered for a choral requiem. In the North Atlantic, above the ship’s final resting place, passengers will pray as a band strikes up a hymn and three floral wreaths are cast onto the waves.

Events marking the disaster started in Halifax, the Canadian port city from where ships sailed to retrieve bodies from the icy Atlantic waters and where 150 of Titanic’s 1,514 victims are buried.

The centenary, however, is a global event with artists, scientists and museums engaged in months-long preparations for commemorations in Britain, Canada, Northern Ireland and the United States.

Some 1,500 passengers and crew members died on April 15, 1912, when the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank, swallowed by the frigid waters of the North Atlantic south of the Grand Banks. There were just over 700 survivors.

The world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner, Titanic was traveling from England to New York, carrying everyone from plutocrats to penniless emigrants, when it struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912. It sank less than three hours later, with the loss of more than 1,500 of the 2,208 passengers and crew.

The Royal Mail Steamer (RMS) Titanic departed from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912, bound for New York City, with brief ports of call at Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland.

It carried more than 2,200 people from all walks of life. More than 300 first-class passengers enjoyed the most extravagant luxuries that money could then buy. Some of the world’s wealthiest people were aboard, including John Jacob Astor and his 18-year-old bride Madeleine; Isidor and Ida Straus; and Benjamin Guggenheim.

Strong Earthquake strikes Mexico City

A strong earthquake has struck a sparsely populated area in the mountains of western Mexico, causing tall buildings to sway more than 200 miles away in Mexico City. The quake occurred around 5.30 p.m. The epicentre was located 50 km southwest of La Mira in Michoacan state at a depth of about 65 km

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said on his Twitter account there were no initial signs of serious damage and that key services in the capital, including its subway system and the international airport, were operating normally.

“There was a nasty crunching sound in my bathroom and everything moved,” said Adela Arceo, who was looking after two young children in the central Roma neighborhood of Mexico City.

Mexico’s seismological service reported no immediate victims or damages and Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard said on his Twitter account that an initial survey of the capital registered no “major damage”.

The international airport and communication networks were operating, he wrote, though cellphone networks were blocked as usually occurs after quakes here.

The quake followed a series of recent temblors in the region. The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a preliminary reading of 7.0 magnitude, but later downgraded it to 6.5.

A quake of that magnitude is capable of producing severe damage in an urban area, but this one occurred about 41 miles below the surface, and a tremor’s power to cause damage is often dissipated when it is so deep.

It was the third big earthquake to hit Mexico in less than a month. A 7.4 magnitude quake struck on March 20, damaging hundreds of buildings in the southwest. That was followed by dozens of aftershocks.

9/11 accused to stand trial at Guantanamo‎

Accused September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four suspected co-conspirators were ordered today to stand trial before a Guantanamo war crimes tribunal, the Pentagon said, a move that throws the politically charged case into the limelight in an election year.

The other four Guantanamo Bay inmates are Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi.

The suspects were first charged in a military commission in 2008, but the case was suspended after the Obama administration came into office and later moved to have them tried in federal court in New York.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his accused conspirators have been held for years at the U.S.-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, while a legal and political battle has played out over how and where to prosecute them.

The trial will bring a deep examination of the events leading up to 9/11, the deadliest attack ever carried out on US soil and one that propelled the country into a global war against al Qaeda and its affiliates.

“The charges allege that the five accused are responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks of 11 September, 2001, in New York and Washington DC, and Shanksville, Pa, resulting in the killing of 2,976 people,” the Defense Department said in a statement.

More than a decade after the attacks that jolted the American psyche, “it is important to see that justice is done,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

He said President Barack Obama was still committed to making good on his promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, after legal setbacks and stiff opposition in Congress forced his hand.

Poll: 69% of Americans want US out of Afghanistan‎

The latest New York Times/CBS News poll released Monday shows that support for the Afghanistan war has plummeted, with more than 69 percent of Americans saying that the United States should not be at war with Afghanistan.

Four months ago, 53 percent were against the war. Correspondingly, 68 percent believe the war is going “somewhat badly” or “very badly,” as compared to 42 percent in November.

In addition, a majority — 53 percent — said that Americans should no longer be fighting in the conflict. Only 23 percent believe that America is “doing the right thing” by fighting in Afghanistan, down from 36 percent in Nov. 2011.

According to CBS, Republicans seemed to have more positive feelings about the war as compared to Democrats, with 37 percent of Republicans saying the war was mostly successful and 32 percent saying the United States fighting in Afghanistan was the right thing.

Recent incidents in Afghanistan involving American troops that included an alleged killing of innocent people, burning of religious documents, and urinating on dead Afghans have infuriated the local population.

In the meantime defense secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday the war in Afghanistan can’t be determined by polls asserting that the US must continue with its strategy in the decade-old conflict despite plummeting American confidence in the war.

Panetta said that there is no question that the American people are tired of war. But, he said, the public understands the US is engaged in Afghanistan because of the attacks on Sept. 11, and to prevent al-Qaida from again finding safe havens there to launch attacks.

Panetta told a news conference in Canada, “We cannot fight wars by polls. If we do that we’re in deep trouble.”

“We have to operate based on what we believe is the best strategy to achieve the mission that we are embarked on,” he said. “And the mission here is to safeguard our country by ensuring that the Taliban and al Qaeda never again find safe haven in Afghanistan.”

“We have to operate based on what we believe is the best strategy to achieve the mission that we are embarked on. And the mission is to safeguard our country by ensuring that the Taliban and al Qaeda never again find a safe haven in Afghanistan,” Panetta said.

Obama warns against rush for exits in Afghanitan

David Cameron and Barack Obama will on Wednesday agree tentative plans for British and US troops to end their “lead combat role” in Afghanistan by the middle of next year.

The two leaders will discuss the issue of British and American troops that would be pulled back from frontline combat roles in Afghanistan by the middle of next year.

The issue has been forced to the top of the leaders’ agenda after an American soldier massacred 16 Afghans, including nine children, during a night-time rampage.

Mr Cameron believes responsibility for frontline duties can be passed to Afghan forces by mid-2013, with American and British troops withdrawing in full by the end of 2014.

In the meantime President Obama said Monday that the massacre of Afghan civilians by an American soldier over the weekend highlights the need for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, but he warned against a “rush for the exits.”

The Obama administration also said Monday the war strategy in Afghanistan remains intact despite the mass killing of Afghan civilians on Sunday, allegedly by an American soldier.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the episode “inexplicable” but insisted it won’t force the U.S. to change course.

Clinton told reporters, “This terrible incident does not change our steadfast dedication to protecting the Afghan people and to doing everything we can to build a strong and stable Afghanistan.”

The killings in Kandahar province have strained relations between Afghans and foreign forces.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta says the suspect could face the death penalty, if found guilty adding that the intention was to try the case in a US military court.

This comes as anti-US sentiment is already high after soldiers burned some copies of the Koran at a Nato base in Kabul last month, sparking deadly riots across the country.

US officials have not released the identity of the rogue soldier who killed the Afghan civilians saying the investigation was going on.

Reports said the soldier was in his 30s with three children and was suffering from mental breakdown.

He had been deployed to Afghanistan in December for his first tour of duty there after serving three times in Iraq.

US President Barack said his his apology had ‘calmed things down’and emphasized he was right to apologise to Afghanistan’s government after U.S. forces accidentally burned Muslim Quran.

Obama told ABC News in an interview, “I think the reason that it was important … is to save lives, and to make sure our troops who are there right now are not placed in further danger.”

The president wrote to Karzai to apologize after Afghan workers found charred copies of the Muslim holy book at the base near Kabul. Muslims view the Koran as the literal word of God and treat each book with deep reverence.

At least 2 US military advisers were shot dead inside the Afghan interior ministry complex in apparent retaliation for the Holy Quran burning.

This comes as the main Republic rivals of president Barack Obama criticized his apology and called it his weakness.

President Barack Obama also emphasized that Washington remains committed to its troops withdrawal schedule despite the latest demonstrations outbreak in Afghanistan.

Prison fire kill more than 350 in Honduras

A massive fire raged through an overcrowded prison in Honduras, killing at least 356 inmates, many of them trapped and screaming inside their cells.

Officials said at least 356 people were confirmed dead by late Wednesday, after the blaze a day earlier consumed half the prison in the town of Comayagua in central Honduras. The toll is the highest from any prison fire in modern history.

Many victims were burned or suffocated to death in their cells.

A spokesman for the Honduras Security Ministry Hector Ivan Mejia said, some 475 people escaped from the prison in the town of Comayagua and 356 are missing and presumed dead.

He also said, at least 21 people had been injured.

In the meantime Danelia Ferrera, a senior official at the attorney general’s office said, at least 359 people were dead by the end.

Ferrera quoted by Reuters News Agency said, “It’s a terrible scene … Our staff went into the cells and the bodies are charred, most of them are unrecognizable.”

Honduras President Porfirio Lobo has pledged a “full and transparent” investigation after a fire at a jail killed more than 350 inmates.

Mr Lobo also suspended local and national prison officials while the inquiry into the “unacceptable” tragedy at the jail in Comayagua was conducted.

This comes as Rights advocates called for reforms of Honduran prisons, which for many years have been beset by chronic overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate food and ramshackle quarters.

Honduran authorities have promised to earmark more funds to fix the problems but failed to do so, activists say.

US President Barack Obama signs Iran sanctions bill

Sunday, January 01, 2012 – U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law on Saturday a defense funding bill putting into place new provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of those suspected of terrorism, as well as imposing fresh sanctions on Iran.

The new bill imposes sanctions on financial institutions dealing with Iran’s central bank, while allowing for exemptions to avoid upsetting energy markets.
The measures, meant to punish Tehran for its controversial nuclear activities, were contained in a $662 billion defense bill.

In a statement accompanying his signature to the $662bn bill, Obama said that he was signing it despite having “serious reservations” about the provisions relating to terrorism, contending that politicians in the US congress were attempting to restrict the ability of counterterrorism officials to protect the country.

The sanctions require foreign companies to make a choice between doing business with Iran’s oil and financial sectors and central bank, or the U.S. financial sector.

The sanctions target both private and government-controlled banks – including central banks – and would take hold after a two- to six-month warning period, depending on the transactions, a senior Obama administration official said.
In the meantime, Iran backs off threat to close Strait of Hormuz.

A commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said on Sunday, talk of blocking the strategic oil route through the Strait of Hormuz is a discussion of the past.

However, he said that Iran had other, unspecified strategies for reacting to any Western aggression.

Survey shows nearly 20% women raped in US

Thursday, December 15, 2011 – According to a survey by United States Centers for Disease Control, Nearly 20% of women in the US are raped or suffer attempted rape at some point in their lives.

The survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control found that more than 12 million women and men have been the victims of some attack of this type with 24 people a minute reported rape.

The CDC report is based on a randomized telephone survey of about 9,000 women and 7,400 men.

Experts in domestic violence don’t find it too surprising, although some aspects of the survey may have led to higher numbers than are sometimes reported.

Even so, a government official who oversaw the research called the results “astounding.”

Director of CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Dr. Linda Degutis said, “This report highlights the heavy toll that sexual violence, stalking and intimate partner violence places on adults in this country,”

Dr. Linda Degutis also said, “People who experience sexual violence, stalking or intimate partner violence often deal with the effects for their entire life.”

One expert called the new report’s estimate on rape and attempted rape “extremely high” – with 1 in 5 women saying they were victims. About half of those cases involved intimate partners. No documentation was sought to verify the women’s claims, which were made anonymously.

Many of those attacked experience rape or sexual assault in their early years, with almost 80% of rape victims suffering their ordeal before before the age of 25.

According to Dr. Linda Degutis, some 35% of women raped before they were aged 18 were also raped as adults.

Sunday, December 11, 2011 – At least two people were killed after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Mexico, shaking buildings and sending people rushing out on to the street.

The U.S. Geological Service initially estimated the quake at magnitude at 6.8, but downgraded it to 6.7 and then 6.5. A quake of that magnitude is capable of causing severe damage, although the depth of this temblor lessened its impact.

According to USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of 40.3 miles (64.9 kilometers). It was centered about 26 miles (42 kilometers) southwest of Iguala in Guerrero and 103 miles (166 kilometers) south-southwest of Mexico City.

There were no immediate reports of severe damage or injuries in Mexico City but emergency services said an 18-year-old man was killed when a roof collapsed in Iguala, a small city between the capital and the tourist resort of Acapulco.

Humberto Calvo, undersecretary of Guerrero’s Civil Protection agency, said three deaths had been reported in the state. He said one man was killed when a house’s roof collapsed in Iguala, a second died in the small town of Ixcateopan and the driver of a cargo truck was killed by rocks that fell on the vehicle driving on the toll highway linking Acapulco with Mexico City.

Calvo said a secondary highway between the two cities was blocked in two places by rockslides.

A severe earthquake in 1985 killed thousands of people and wrecked parts of Mexico City, and many residents live with the fear of a repeat.

Al Qaeda linked suspect detained in New York city

Monday, November 21, 2011 – According to US officials, Jose Pimentel, 27, a Dominican-born convert to Islam, was on the verge of testing his homemade explosives in a mailbox when he was arrested Saturday in a Manhattan apartment.

Jose Pimentel, 27, is in custody after authorities say he intended to target U.S. military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Police say he also intended to strike U.S. postal facilities and police in New York and Bayonne, New Jersey.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly identified the suspect as a follower of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born cleric who rose to become a top figure in al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Pimentel allegedly tried to contact al-Awlaki directly, but never got a response.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly while speaking at a city Hall news conference said, “We had to act quickly yesterday because he was in fact putting this bomb together. It would have been not appropriate for us to let him walk out the door with that bomb.”

In the meantime, attorney for the man accused of plotting to detonate pipe bombs in and around New York says his client doesn’t match the profile of someone who would commit terrorism.

Standard & Poor’s Agency downgrades US credit rating

Saturday, August 06, 2011 – The United States’ top-notch AAA rating has been downgraded by one of the world’s leading credit rating agencies, Standard & Poor’s.

The long-term US rating was cut by one notch to AA+ with a negative outlook by Standard & Poor’s, citing concerns about budget deficits.

According to S&P agency, the deficit reduction plan passed by the US Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough.

According to reports, the downgrade could erode investors’ confidence in the world’s largest economy.

This comes as US is already struggling with huge debts, unemployment of 9.1% and fears of a possible double-dip recession.

The downgrade could raise the cost of US government borrowing, which in turn could trickle down to higher interest rates for local governments and individuals.

Meanwhile, a number of analysts said with debt woes across much of the developed world, US debt remained an attractive option for investors.

In the meantime, the two other major credit rating agencies, Moody’s and Fitch, said on Friday night they had no immediate plans to follow S&P in taking the US off their lists of risk-free borrowers.

US media quoted officials in Washington saying that the agency’s sums were deeply flawed.

Unnamed sources were quoted as saying that a treasury official had spotted a $2 trillion [£1.2 trillion] mistake in the agency’s analysis.

A US treasury department spokesman said of the S&P analysts offering any immediate explanation, “A judgment flawed by a $2tn error speaks for itself.”

But, the chairman of S&P sovereign ratings committee, John Chambers said, US could have averted a downgrade if it had resolved its congressional stalemate earlier.

He said, “The first thing it could have done is raise the debt ceiling in a timely matter so the debate would have been avoided to begin with.”

Meanwhile, International community have a mixed reaction towards the S&P move.

A commentary in the official Xinhua news agency said, China, the world’s largest holder of US debt, had “every right now to demand the United States address its structural debt problems and ensure the safety of China’s dollar assets.”

The commentary further added, “International supervision over the issue of US dollars should be introduced and a new, stable and secured global reserve currency may also be an option to avert a catastrophe caused by any single country.”

In the meantime, officials in Japan, South Korea and Australia have urged a calm response to the downgrade.

The S&P announcement comes after a week of turmoil on global stock markets, partly triggered by fears over the US economy’s recovery and the eurozone crisis.

S&P had threatened the downgrade if the US could not agree to cut its federal debt by at least $4tn over the next decade.

Instead, the bill passed by Congress on Tuesday plans $2.1tn in savings over 10 years.

S&P said the Republicans and Democrats had only been able to agree “relatively modest savings”, which fell “well short” of what had been envisaged.

In a report issued by S&P late Friday said, “The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilise the government’s medium-term debt dynamics.”

The report further added, “More broadly, the downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges.”

The agency said it might lower the US long-term rating another notch to AA within the next two years if its deficit reduction measures were deemed inadequate.

“The political brinksmanship of recent months highlights what we see as America’s governance and policymaking becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable than what we previously believed,” it added.

9/11 revenge killer executed

Thursday, July 21, 2011 – A Texas man who went on the rampage after the 9/11 attacks has been executed for killing two shop workers in what he claimed was revenge for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He claimed one of his sisters had perished in the World Trade Centre when al Qaeda operatives hijacked planes and flew them into the twin towers in New York.

Prosecutors in Texas were sceptical of his claim. They say there was never any proof his sibling even existed and that robbery, not revenge, was his motive.

Mark Stroman, 41, died by lethal injection despite last-minute representations by his lawyer at the US Supreme Court.

In his final weeks Stroman’s plea for clemency was backed by Rais Bhuiyan, who was shot but survived.

Mr Bhuiyan had said that killing Stroman was “not the solution”.

The execution at Huntsville prison was delayed slightly by the final legal appeals, before Stroman was taken to the death chamber.

He said, “Even though I lay on this gurney, seconds away from my death, I am at total peace.”

“God bless America. God bless everyone,” he said. “Let’s do this damn thing.”

Stroman was pronounced dead at 2053 CDT (0153 GMT).

While spaking with BBC, Mr Bhuiyan, 37, said Stroman was guilty of “hate crime”, but warned that his death would not achieve anything.

Mr. Bhuiyan also said, “His execution will not eradicate hate crimes from this world. We will just simply lose another human life.”

So far at least eight have been executed in Texas including Stroman’s execution in 2011.

They cited the “significant surprise” of Mr Bhuiyan’s support, and argued that Stroman’s path to “this violent frenzy” was not made clear by defence lawyers during earlier trials and appeals.

Stroman admitted the killings, saying he was motivated by anger at the 9/11 attacks and wanted to take revenge on Muslims – or people who resembled Muslims.

“I had some poor upbringing and I grabbed a hold of some ideas which was ignorance, you know, and hate is pure ignorance. I no longer want to be like hate, I want to be like me,” he said.

Besides Patel’s slaying, Stroman was charged but not tried in the shooting death of Waqar Hasan, 46, a Pakistani immigrant who moved to Dallas in 2001 to open a convenience store. Hasan was killed four days after the terrorists struck. The attack on Bhuiyan came a week later.

Obama meets Bin Laden raid team

BBC – US President Barack Obama has met the military team that killed Osama Bin Laden and praised their mission as “one of the greatest military operations in our nation’s history”.

He also vowed the US would defeat the al-Qaeda terror network Bin Laden led.

Earlier, al-Qaeda confirmed the death of Bin Laden, according to a statement attributed to the group posted online.

Meanwhile, documents found at Bin Laden’s compound suggest al-Qaeda was planning further US attacks.

Officials are examining computers, DVDs, hard drives and documents seized from the Abbottabad home where Bin Laden may have hidden for up to six years.

One planned attack targeted a US rail route, US officials revealed, although no imminent threat was detected.

Raid team meeting

Speaking before cheering troops at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Mr Obama said: “These Americans deserve credit for one of the greatest military operations in our nation’s history.”

Referring to the threat from al-Qaeda operatives, he said: “We have cut off their head and we will ultimately defeat them.”

Mr Obama’s address came after he met the US Navy Seals and Army helicopter pilots involved in the raid in Pakistan, for a first-hand account of events on the ground.

“It was a chance for me to say on behalf of Americans and people around the world ‘job well done’,” Mr Obama said.

“Thanks to the incredible skill and courage of countless individuals – intelligence, military over many years – the terrorist leader that struck our nation 9/11 will never threaten American again.”

But he warned that what he called “a very tough fight” was not over yet.

The BBC’s Steve Kingstone, in Washington, says that the White House has tried to limit the fanfare surrounding the killing of Bin Laden.

But this was a testosterone moment before an audience of pumped-up soldiers, our correspondent says.

The statement posted by al-Qaeda on jihadist websites apparently confirming Bin Laden’s death said his blood would not be “wasted” and that al-Qaeda would continue to attack the US and its allies.

Several rallies were held in Pakistan on Friday in protest against the US raid, which was carried out without the prior knowledge of the Pakistani authorities.

The Afghan Taliban also issued its own statement on Friday, saying the death of Bin Laden would give “new impetus to the current jihad”.

Mr Obama, who was joined on the visit to Fort Campbell by Vice-President Joe Biden, thanked soldiers who had returned from Afghanistan for their military service.

He repeated his intention to draw down US forces in Afghanistan this summer.

‘Never forget’

Mr Obama earlier made a stop in Indianapolis, in the state of Indiana, to promote his energy policies and showcase a transmission plant that produces systems for hybrid cars.

On Thursday he visited the site of the World Trade Center, where he met firefighters and police officers who responded to the 9/11 attacks.

“When we say we will never forget, we mean what we say,” Mr Obama told firefighters in New York.

The president has received some criticism in the past several days for not releasing photographs of Bin Laden’s corpse, but his opinion poll ratings have risen in the wake of his decision to authorise the raid.

Bin Laden was shot dead on Monday when US commandos stormed his compound in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad.

American officials say the CIA had been secretly watching for months the house in Pakistan where Bin Laden was killed.

From a safe house in Abbottabad, a surveillance team used telephoto lenses and sensitive eavesdropping equipment, US reports said.

Americans need not visit India, Mexico for cheap healthcare: Obama

WASHINGTON: With spiraling healthcare cost a cause of concern in America, US President Barack Obama on Tuesday pushed for affordable healthcare arguing that he would not like his countrymen to travel to countries like India and Mexico for cheaper treatment. “My preference would be that you don’t have to travel to Mexico or India to get cheap health care. I’d like you to be able to get it right here in the United States of America that’s high quality,” Obama said amidst applause at a community college in Virginia.

Obama was responding to a question from the audience on increasing healthcare cost in the US. “Before we went on the path of you can go somewhere else to get your health care, let’s work to see if we can reduce the costs of health care here in the United States of America. That’s going to make a big difference,” he said. “And Medicare is a good place to start because Medicare is such a big purchaser that if we can start changing how the healthcare system works inside of Medicare, then the entire system changes.

All the doctors, all the hospitals, they will all adapt to these best practices,” Obama said. “One of the things that we want to do as part of our healthcare reform package is let’s start doing a better job of negotiating better prices for prescription drugs here in the United States so that you don’t feel like you’re getting cheated because you’re paying 30 per cent more or 20 per cent more than prescription drugs in Canada or Mexico,” he said. Re-importation, he said, is a short-term solution that a lot of seniors are resorting to.

“But why should drugs that are invented here in the United States end up being more expensive than another country?” he asked. “Well, the reason is, is because drug companies can get away with it here and they can’t get away with it there, and we should change some of those systems to make it cheaper for everybody here. But that’s going to make a huge difference in terms of reducing our deficit,” he noted.

US examining ‘full range of options’ on Libya: Obama

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama said on Thursday he is examining the “full range” of military options, including a no-fly zone, if the revolt in Libya turns into a bloody stalemate and humanitarian disaster. Accusing Moammar Gaddafi of encouraging violence against his citizens, Obama again called on the Libyan leader to stand down for the good of his country. “We are looking at every option that’s out there, in addition to the non-military actions that we’ve taken. I want to make sure that those full range of options are available to me,” he said. A no-fly zone, which US military leaders have warned would necessarily be preceded by US air strikes, “is one of the options that we would be looking at.” Obama said he had authorized the use of US military aircraft to help move refugees who have fled the unrest in Libya, and was sending US teams to the Libyan border to help coordinate humanitarian aid efforts. “I don’t want to be hamstrung,” Obama said. “I want us to be making our decisions based on what’s going to be best for the Libyan people, in consultation with the international community. “And we are doing that not just here in the United States within our own agencies, but we’re also doing it in consultation with NATO,” he told a White House news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Libyan warplanes struck the town of Brega on Thursday, as a rag-tag army of rebels holding the eastern strategic city manned machine-guns on pick-up trucks after two bombs fell near the local oil refinery. The attack sparked fears of a new bid by troops loyal to Gaddafi’s regime to recapture the key port, 200 kilometers (125 miles) southwest of the main eastern city of Benghazi. Obama acknowledged: “There is a danger of stalemate that over time could be bloody. And that is something we’re obviously considering. “So what I want to make sure of is that the United States has full capacity to act potentially rapidly if the situation deteriorated in such a way that you had a humanitarian crisis on our hands. “Or a situation in which… defenseless civilians were finding themselves trapped and in great danger,” he said. Obama said the United States and the entire world “continues to be outraged by the appalling violence against the Libyan people.” “Let me just be very unambiguous about this. Colonel Gaddafi needs to step down from power and leave. That is good for his country. It is good for his people. It’s the right thing to do,” Obama stressed. And he warned that those still loyal to the regime should know “that history is moving against Colonel Gaddafi.” Libya has been rocked by the revolt against Gaddafi’s four-decade rule which erupted on February 17 following uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia which ousted their long-time leaders. Obama said the United States has already moved swiftly to implement “the most rapid and forceful set of sanctions that have ever been applied internationally,” freezing some $30 billion of Libyan assets. But until now there had appeared to be strong differences within the administration over any recourse to military force. Defense secretary Robert Gates and top US military officials warned Wednesday that imposing no-fly zone would be a major military undertaking, and would necessarily require air strikes to take out Libya’s air defenses. “Let’s just call a spade a spade,” Gates told US lawmakers, decrying “loose talk” about a no-fly zone. “A no-fly zone begins with an attack on Libya to destroy the air defenses. That’s the way you do a no-fly zone. And then you can fly planes around the country and not worry about our guys being shot down. But that’s the way it starts,” Gates said. Senators John Kerry, a Democrat, and John McCain, a Republican, have both urged Obama to impose a no-fly zone. Obama said the immediate priority was to deliver humanitarian aid to refugees and Libyans inside the country who may find themselves facing food shortages if Gaddafi continues to hunker down. He said he had instructed the US Agency for International Development to send teams to the border with Libya to coordinate with United Nations and international humanitarian relief groups inside the country. He also said he had authorized US military aircraft to help fly Egyptians stranded on the Tunisian border back home, and civilian charter flights to help refugees from other countries to find their way to their home countries. A major European operation was under way on Thursday to airlift out of Tunisia thousands of people, most of them Egyptian workers stranded at the border.

Afghan war costs USD 300 million a day: Pentagon
WASHINGTON: The withdrawal of American troops from Iraq will allow for a reduced US defense budget in 2012 but the war in Afghanistan still costs the United States close to 300 million dollars a day.

Under the Pentagon’s proposed budget, the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will drop to USD 117.8 billion for fiscal year 2012, a reduction of 41.5 billion from the previous year.

As the US war effort winds down in Iraq, the budget sets aside USD 10.6 billion for “Operation New Dawn,” with the remaining 50,000 US troops there due to withdraw by the end of 2011.

Spending for the Afghan mission calls for USD 107.3 billion, down slightly from the last budget, which requested USD 113.5 billion.

President Barack Obama has vowed to start a withdrawal in July of the roughly 97,000 troops now in Afghanistan.

The budget released on Monday offered no insight into the scale of the planned drawdown, with the Pentagon’s budget document assuming an average of 98,250 troops on the ground by the end of 2012.

Gates said the Pentagon had “decided to budget conservatively” as it was too soon to predict how many troops would be withdrawn after July.

“But that’s not to say that we will have 98,000 troops at the end of FY 2012. In fact it’s a lead pipe cinch we won’t.”

The budget for Afghanistan and Iraq includes USD79.2 billion for operations, USD10.1 billion to counter the threat posed by homemade bombs — the main killer of NATO-led troops in the war.

Some USD11.9 billion is devoted to repairing and replacing equipment lost or damaged and USD12.8 billion for training and arming Afghan security forces, who are supposed to gradually take over security duties between now and 2015.

By October, the United States and NATO plans to expand the Afghan army to 172,000 soldiers and the police to 134,000 police.

US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in Arizona

(BBC) – A US congresswoman has been shot in the head and six other people have been killed by a gunman in Arizona.

Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, 40, was shot at close range during a public meeting in Tucson.

She is in a critical condition, but the doctor treating her said he was “very optimistic about her recovery”.

The dead included a nine-year-old girl and a federal judge. President Barack Obama said the shooting was a “tragedy for our entire country”.

The Associated Press news agency reported that one of Ms Giffords’ political aides was also killed in the shooting.

In addition to the six deaths, police said a total of 13 people – including Ms Giffords – had been shot and wounded in the attack.

A suspect named by US media as Arizona resident Jared Loughner, 22, was arrested after the incident.

Local police, who have not confirmed the suspect’s name, said they were hunting a possible accomplice.

“[The suspect] has kind of a troubled past, and we’re not convinced that he acted alone,” said Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.

“There is some reason to believe that he came to this location with another individual.”

Presidential tribute

The attacker struck as Ms Giffords held one of her regular open-invitation meetings – which she called “Congress on your corner” – with her constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson.

An eyewitness to the killings, Steven Rayle, told AP he had played dead to escape.

“I had passed by the table, the congresswoman was standing there talking to several people, I went to the side of the table… and I looked up and I saw a man shoot her in the head,” said Mr Rayle.

“Then he began just spraying gunfire everywhere. At that point I ducked behind the concrete post.

“The whole thing unfolded maybe 12 or 15 seconds. As he came around [the post], I lay on the ground and acted as if I were shot.”

The gunman was reportedly overpowered by members of the crowd, before being taken away by police.

The dead judge was named by officials as John Roll, who had spent more than 40 year on the federal bench. It is not thought that he was deliberately targeted.

Mr Obama urged the nation to “come together, and support each other”.

“I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping all the victims and their families, including Gabby, in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.

He described Ms Giffords as a personal friend and an “extraordinary public servant”.

Mr Obama has tasked FBI director Robert Mueller with overseeing the investigation.

‘Rising star’

Ms Giffords, who represents the eighth district of Arizona in the House of Representatives, is married to space shuttle astronaut Mark Kelly.

She has served on several congressional committees, including those covering the armed services and foreign affairs, and is a member of the “blue dog” group of centrist Democrats.

Jeff Rogers, chairman of the local Democrats, told the BBC that Ms Giffords was “a rising star” in the Democrats with hopes of eventually winning the Arizona Senate seat.

She upset Arizona conservatives by supporting Mr Obama’s healthcare reform bill last year.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a conservative Republican, placed Ms Giffords on a list of politicians she wanted to remove from office in mid-term elections last November.

Ms Palin has issued a statement offering her condolences to the families of Ms Giffords and the other victims of the attack.

The House of Representatives majority leader Eric Cantor announced that all of next week’s legislative debates would be postponed to allow politicians to “take whatever actions may be necessary in light of today’s tragedy”.

US wants Twitter details of Wikileaks activists

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is currently fighting extradition from the UK to Sweden

(BBC) – The US government has subpoenaed the social networking site Twitter for personal details of people connected to Wikileaks, court documents show.

The US District Court in Virginia said it wanted information including user names, addresses, connection records, telephone numbers and payment details.

Those named include Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and an Icelandic MP.

The US is examining possible charges against Mr Assange over the leaking of 250,000 classified diplomatic cables.

Reports indicate the Department of Justice may seek to indict him on charges of conspiring to steal documents with Private First Class Bradley Manning, a US Army intelligence analyst.

Mr Manning is facing a court martial and up to 52 years in prison for allegedly sending Wikileaks the diplomatic cables, as well military logs about incidents in Afghanistan and Iraq and a classified military video.

‘Given a message’

According to the court order issued on 14 December by the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the US Attorney’s Office has provided evidence to show that the information held by Twitter is “relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation”.

The San Francisco-based website was given three days to respond was also told not to disclose that it had been served the subpoena, or the existence of the investigation.

However, the same court removed those restrictions on Wednesday and authorised Twitter to disclose the order to its customers.

The subpoena requested the details of Mr Assange, Pfc Manning and Icelandic MP Birgitta Jonsdottir, as well as Dutch hacker Rop Gonggrijp and US programmer Jacob Appelbaum, both of whom have previously worked with Wikileaks.

The information sought includes mailing addresses and billing information, connection records and session times, IP addresses used to access Twitter, email accounts, as well as the “means and source of payment”.

Mr Assange condemned the court order on Saturday, saying it amounted to harassment.

“If the Iranian government was to attempt to coercively obtain this information from journalists and activists of foreign nations, human rights groups around the world would speak out,” he said in a statement.

The order was unsealed “thanks to legal action by Twitter”, he added.

Twitter has declined comment on the claim, saying only: “To help users protect their rights, it’s our policy to notify users about law enforcement and governmental requests for their information, unless we are prevented by law from doing so.”

Ms Jonsdottir, who until recently was a vocal supporter of Wikileaks, revealed on Friday that the Department of Justice had asked Twitter for her personal details and all of her tweets since November 2009.

She said she had 10 days to appeal against the subpoena.

Ms Jonsdottir wrote on her Twitter feed: “USA government wants to know about all my tweets and more since 1 November 2009. Do they realise I am a member of parliament in Iceland?”

She said that she would call Iceland’s justice minister to discuss the request.

“I think I am being given a message, almost like someone breathing in a phone,” she said.

Ms Jonsdottir was the chief sponsor of the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative (IMMI) law, which made Iceland an international haven for investigative journalism and free speech.

She has said she helped to produce a video for Wikileaks showing a US Apache helicopter shooting civilians in Iraq in 2007.

The classified video, released by Wikileaks last April, brought the whistle-blowing website to the world’s attention.

The website’s founder, Julian Assange, is currently fighting extradition from the UK to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning as part of an inquiry into alleged sex offences.

Ms Jonsdottir reportedly left Wikileaks late last year after she argued unsuccessfully that Mr Assange should take a low-profile role until his legal troubles were resolved.

Prince Ali Reza Pahlavi Commits Suicide

The suicide of the shah’s son is the latest tragedy for a dynasty drenched in blood. Stephen Kinzer on the death of a prince. Plus, more on Prince Ali Reza Pahlavi’s life.

Down the street from my apartment in Boston’s South End, a single gunshot shattered the pre-dawn darkness Tuesday. Police arrived to find a suicide. This doesn’t happen any more often in the South End than anywhere else, and passers-by like me were left to imagine what tragedy lay behind it. Then came news of the man’s identity. He was Prince Ali Reza Pahlavi, son of the late shah of Iran.

This shocking act of self-slaughter was the latest violent tragedy in the long history of a family drenched in blood—first that of the Iranians it tortured and killed, then its own. It is a drama of Shakespearean dimensions. The shah once ruled Iran with an iron fist, but his family later paid dearly for his sins, echoing Hamlet’s judgment that royal crime “cannot come to good.”

Prince Ali Reza’s father died in humiliating exile barely a year after being chased from his homeland in one of the 20th century’s most spectacular revolutions. His aunt, Princess Ashraf, the shah’s twin sister, a once-sinister figure known as Iran’s “black panther,” has suffered through depressions and addictions, three failed marriages, and the assassination of one of her sons. His sister, Leila, was found dead in a London hotel room in 2001 after taking an overdose of barbiturates.

“Like millions of young Iranians, he too was deeply disturbed by all the ills fallen upon his beloved homeland, as well as carrying the burden of losing a father and a sister in his young life,” the Pahlavi family said in a brief statement on Tuesday. “Although he struggled for years to overcome his sorrow, he finally succumbed.”

Iran has also succumbed over the course of a cruel century, in large part because of the depredations of the Pahlavi dynasty. Yet this was a dynasty that set out to modernize and strengthen a nation that was prostrate and on the brink of extinction when it seized power. Prince Ali Reza’s tragedy mirrored that of his long-suffering land.

The founder of the dynasty, Reza Shah, Prince Ali Reza’s grandfather, was a titanic figure, a brutal tyrant but also a visionary reformer. He was an illiterate soldier who came to power in a coup and made himself shah in 1926. The main reason he refused to lead his country toward democracy was that he wished his son to be shah after he was gone.

He died in the manner of a soldier who cannot bear dishonor and disgrace, of a single shot to the head.

That came to pass with Mohammad Reza Shah’s ascension in 1941, but the son turned out to be a cowardly wimp, completely unlike his commanding father. He hated the democracy that emerged in Iran after World War II—personified by its most formidable leader, Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh—but could do nothing to crush it. Then, like a gift from God, the CIA and British MI-6 arrived to overthrow Mossadegh in 1953, angered by his attempt to nationalize Iran’s oil industry. That allowed Mohammad Reza Shah to take absolute power.

The Pahlavi dynasty was one of the few facts of 20th-century geopolitical life that nearly everyone considered permanent and unalterable. Its collapse in 1979 stunned the world no less than the collapse of the Soviet Union a decade later.

Prince Ali Reza spent his childhood in royal luxury. He was the second son of an absolute monarch who held the fate of 30 million people in his hands, became America’s chief ally in the Middle East, and lost himself in such deep megalomania that he came to consider himself one of the greatest kings of all time, rightful successor to Persian titans like Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes.

(BBC) – President Obama was treated in the White House doctor’s office following the game at Fort McNair

US President Barack Obama has been given 12 stitches after he was hit in the lip during a basketball game.

Mr Obama was inadvertently struck by someone’s elbow during the game on Friday morning, the White House said.

The US president was treated in the doctor’s office of the White House following the game at Fort McNair, in Washington DC.

Later, Mr Obama was seen at the White House holding what appeared to be an ice pack to his lip.

“After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player’s elbow in the lip … the president received 12 stitches today, administered by the White House Medical Unit,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement.

Mr Obama was given a local anaesthetic while receiving the stitches, he added.

“The medical unit that treated Obama used a smaller filament than typically used, which increases the number of stitches but makes a tighter stitch and results in a smaller scar,” added Mr Gibbs.

Mr Obama was playing basketball with his personal aide Reggie Love – who played basketball for Duke University – and other members of his family on what is the thanksgiving holiday in United States.

He was photographed in a grey T-shirt and jogging bottoms leaving the basketball facility, holding his bottom lip.

A few hours later, reporters who had gathered on the White House driveway for the arrival of the Christmas Tree saw the president in an upstairs window, pressing what appeared to be a cold compress against his mouth.

The president has been a long time player of the sport, and has even been seen to take to the court with Cabinet members.

US nuclear transport agents seen ‘in drunken incidents’

(BBC) – US agents who drive nuclear weapons around the country were involved in 16 alcohol-related incidents in two years, the energy department has said.

One was arrested for public drunkenness and two were held after an incident at a bar while on overnight missions.

The incidents “indicate a potential vulnerability in [a] critical national security mission”, an energy department report said.

A spokesman noted agents had never had a fatal accident or radiation leak.

Extended missions

In a newly released report, the Department of Energy’s inspector general’s office said it had launched an investigation after hearing complaints of alcohol abuse among agents in the Office of Secure Transportation (OST).

OST agents drive nuclear weapons, weapons components and nuclear materials around the country, and are trained to defend the shipments from attack and sabotage.

Investigators discovered 16 “alcohol-related incidents” from 2007 to 2009. Two flagged up as especially worrisome occurred while the agents were on “secure extended missions”, during which the convoy vehicles are secured overnight en route and the agents check into hotels.

The Office of Secure Transportation has about 600 trained security agents.

In 2007, investigators found, an agent was arrested for public intoxication; in 2009, two were handcuffed and held by police “after an incident at a local bar”.

“OST management took what appeared to be appropriate action in these cases,” investigators wrote. “However, in our judgment, alcohol incidents such as these, as infrequent as they may be, indicate a potential vulnerability in OST’s critical national security mission.”

Investigators declined to make formal recommendations.

“[The] Office of Secure Transportation maintains a highly trained, highly professional force that has safely and securely transported nuclear materials more than 100 million miles (161 million km) without a single fatal accident or any release of radiation,” said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the energy department’s National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA).

“Of hundreds of agents, the report identifies just two cases involving NNSA personnel being intoxicated while on overnight stops during official missions.”

The NNSA stressed that there had been no instances of agents drunk-driving while on duty.

G20 agree to address currencies

(BBC) – Leaders of the G20 group of major economies have agreed to avoid “competitive devaluation” of currencies after a second day of difficult talks in the South Korea capital, Seoul.

Leaders agreed to come up with “indicative guidelines” to tackle trade imbalances afflicting world growth.

Tensions had been high between some delegations over how to correct distortions in currency and trade.

Some fear the conflict may threaten global growth.

The disagreement has primarily been between China and the United States.

US President Barack Obama said there should be no controversy about fixing imbalances “that helped to contribute to the crisis that we just went through”.

Earlier a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that China was acting to address Washington’s concerns about its currency.

“I think that if you look past some of the heat you’ve seen recently and you look at what’s happening in our very important relationship with China, I’m very encouraged by the progress we’ve seen,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain issued a joint declaration to try to calm bond market jitters over a possible future EU bail-out fund.

As Irish bond yields reached a fresh high, leaders discussed the Irish Republic’s debt crisis amid concerns that the European Union will have to step in.

“Any new [bail-out] mechanism would only come into effect after mid-2013 with no impact whatsoever on the current arrangements,” finance ministers from the five countries said in the declaration.

UK sources say that officials from the UK, France and Russia had to be called in the early hours of this morning after “fractious” negotiations between China and the US broke down in “acrimony”.

Obama seeks co-operation at G20

(BBC) – The global financial system and world economy are set to dominate the agenda at a two-day meeting of the G20 group of nations in South Korea.

But there are fears the summit in Seoul could descend into a row between the US and China about so-called “currency wars” and trade imbalances.

Ahead of the meeting US President Barack Obama urged leaders to work together for global economic recovery.

He said the US would seek to create jobs and reduce global imbalances.

On a visit to a US base in Seoul before the main G20 meetings began, Mr Obama took the opportunity to urge North Korea to engage with the international community.

“North Korea’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons will only lead to more isolation and less security,” he said. “But there is another path available to North Korea.”

Domestic demand

Washington has blamed global economic imbalances in part on Beijing’s alleged manipulation of its currency to help boost Chinese exports, which has led to Beijing amassing huge foreign reserves.

Others, however, say America’s economic policies, specifically creating new money to pursue quantitative easing (QE), could also be a form of currency manipulation for its own ends.

Speaking to the BBC, the president of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, said there were “definitely tensions” over currency.

“One has to be wary of the tensions because you don’t want them to slip into protectionism,” he said.

But he said that while the US raising the issue over China was “useful”, he added China’s next five-year plan for its economic development would focus on increasing domestic demand, adding this would be important in shifting China’s growth.

Critics

At a G20 press conference, Brazil’s Finance Minister Guido Mantega criticised the US central bank’s latest QE programme.

“The trouble with putting an extra $600bn into the US economy is that this money will not go into production, will not create jobs and neither will it boost domestic consumption.

“With more money in the market, investors will take advantage of higher interest rates in other places, put the money into these countries’ stock exchanges or invest in commodities, raising the prices and causing inflation in our countries,” Mr Mantega said.

Accused of forcing the dollar down to trade its way back to prosperity, Mr Obama is expected to hold one-on-one talks with two of the strongest critics of his administration’s economic direction – Chinese President Hu Jintao and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

President Obama has said that the US alone could not restore growth but accepted the US must change, adding: “When all nations do their part… we all benefit from higher growth.”

However, he defended America’s “decisive action to halt the fall in activity caused by the deepest crisis we have experienced in generations”.

And he again called on countries not to rely on exports to pull them out of their economic problems.

“We all now recognize that the foundation for a strong and durable recovery will not materialize if American households stop saving and go back to spending based on borrowing.

“Yet, no one country can achieve our joint objective of a strong, sustainable, and balanced recovery on its own.

“Just as the United States must change, so too must those economies that have previously relied on exports to offset weaknesses in their down demand,” Mr Obama said.

Currency concerns

Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron also warned that China should act to correct its trade imbalance.

Critics, especially in the US, have called for tariffs on Chinese imports unless the yuan is allowed to appreciate.

It is feared that other countries will rush to allow currency devaluation to also make their exports more competitive.

But China considers the exchange rate of its currency to be an internal matter and has only agreed to only gradually let the yuan appreciate.

The governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, has urged the G20 to agree to let current account imbalances unwind, rather than impose targets and policy instruments that could be damaging to all.

(BBC) – A leader of Mexico’s powerful Gulf drug cartel has been shot dead by security forces in a town near the US border, the Mexican military says.

Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, known as “Tony Tormenta”, was killed in the city of Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville in Texas.

He is the brother of former Gulf cartel leader Osiel Cardenas, who was extradited to the US in 2007.

Residents in Matamoros spoke of a shoot-out lasting for several hours.

Three suspected gunmen and two marines were also killed in the gun battle, according to federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire.

Cardenas, 48, had been indicted in the US on drugs charges, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration was offering a reward of up to $5m for his arrest.

He was accused of smuggling tonnes of drugs across the US/Mexico border in the course of the past decade.

Friday’s operation involved several hundred Mexican soldiers and marines, and local residents were trapped in shops and schools for extended periods.

Bridges across the international border into Texas were closed briefly, as the military used firearms and grenades to tackle suspected cartel members.

Lucrative routes

The Mexican police and army are struggling to control armed cartels in a number of areas of the country.

Several groups are trying to control lucrative drug smuggling routes into the US.

More than 28,000 people have died in the drugs war since Mexican President Felipe Calderon ordered the army into the fight in 2006.

The policy has had some successes, but that has not led to a decline in the number of killings, or the level of kidnappings, extortion and human trafficking that the gangs also engage in

(BBC) – Michelle Obama and former president Bill Clinton were on the campaign trail supporting fellow Democrats

Candidates are making their final push for votes on the last day of campaigning for Tuesday’s US Congressional mid-term elections.

President Barack Obama’s Democratic party is expected to lose its majority in the House of Representatives and is struggling to keep the Senate.

Mr Obama spent the day at the White House attending meetings and recording radio interviews.

Republicans hope to capitalise on voters’ discontent with the economy.

“We’re hoping now for a fresh start with the American people,” Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele said on Monday.

“If we don’t live up to those expectations, then we’ll have a problem in two years.”

Up for election on Tuesday are all 435 House seats, 37 of the 100 seats in the Senate, governorships of 37 of the 50 states and all but four state legislatures.

The Republican Party needs to gain 39 House seats to win control of the lower chamber of Congress – an amount opinion polls suggest they will easily win – and 10 to take over the Senate.

Democrats are hoping to hold on to the Senate by at least one or two seats.

In addition, voters will decide on ballot measures ranging from marijuana legalisation in California to a referendum in Oklahoma on forbidding judges from using Islamic Sharia law in rulings.

Rallying support

Mr Obama tried to rally support for Democrats on Monday by giving an interview to Ryan Seacrest, host of the popular TV programme American Idol. The interview is due to air on Tuesday on Seacrest’s nationally syndicated radio show.

Mr Obama also recorded interviews for radio stations in the cities of Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Honolulu and Miami.

Former President Bill Clinton rallied Democrats a day before the elections in the states of New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Mr Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd in the Pennsylvania town of McKeesport that the most important thing was to get out the vote on Tuesday.

Both Republicans and Democrats appeared on early morning TV shows to try to motivate supporters for election day.

Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine and Mr Steele appeared on the ABC network’s Good Morning America, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas were interviewed on NBC’s Today show and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour was on CBS’s The Early Show.

Mr Steele acknowledged that recapturing the Senate would be a difficult task, while Mr Barbour said claiming a majority in the Senate would be “a bit of a stretch”.

Economic blame

On Sunday, Mr Obama wrapped up a final blizzard of rallies and speeches in the key battleground state of Ohio.

Speaking in Cleveland, he repeated the theme from his 2008 presidential campaign.

“In two days, you have a chance to once again say: ‘Yes, we can’.”

He urged his supporters to get the vote out and sought to place the blame for the country’s economic woes on the policies of his predecessor, Republican President George W Bush.

The rally was short of capacity, a contrast to the 2008 election when across the country people were turned away from Mr Obama’s packed-out appearances.

The Democrats face losing up to six House seats, one Senate race and the governorship in Ohio.

Tea Party momentum

Republicans are riding high in opinion polls, buoyed by discontent over unemployment running near 10%, slow economic growth and a burst housing market bubble that has seen many Americans lose their homes.

The party has also gained from the backing of the populist Tea Party movement, which has given voice to conservative grassroots opposition to Mr Obama and the Democrats’ economic stimulus programmes and healthcare overhaul.

Tea Party favourite Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2008 and a former governor of Alaska, said in a TV appearance on Sunday that Tuesday’s vote would be a “political earthquake”.

She said voters would tell the president and the Democrats: “You blew it, President Obama. We gave you the two years to fulfil your promise of making sure that our economy starts roaring back to life again.”

Ms Palin is not running for any office but has hinted at a 2012 run for the presidency.

Republican House leader John Boehner, who stands to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi as the House Speaker if the polls are borne out, acknowledged the country’s economic problems had not started under Mr Obama.

“But instead of fixing them, his policies have made them worse,” he said, campaigning in Ohio.

The results of the day’s gubernatorial and state legislative elections could also have a big impact on American politics.

In a given state, the party that controls the state legislature and holds the governor’s office has influence over the redrawing of the Congressional district map for the next 10 years.

Explosives in U.S.-bound parcels from Yemen: Obama

(Reuters) – Security officials in Britain and Dubai intercepted two parcel bombs being sent from Yemen to the United States in a “credible terrorist threat,” President Barack Obama said on Friday.

The parcels were bound for “two places of Jewish worship in Chicago,” Obama said. The Anti-Defamation League, a prominent Jewish organization, earlier warned of a danger to U.S. Jewish institutions from packages mailed from Britain, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Suspicion fell on al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which had taken responsibility for a failed plot to blow up a U.S. passenger jet on Christmas Day in 2009.

The group, thought to include Yemenis and Saudis, is affiliated with al Qaeda, whose militants killed about 3,000 people using hijacked planes in the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.

“Initial examinations of those packages has determined that they do apparently contain explosive material,” Obama said in a televised briefing, calling it “a credible terrorist threat against our country.”

The White House said “both of these packages originated from Yemen” and Obama was notified of the threat on Thursday night.

Speaking just days before the U.S. congressional elections on Tuesday, Obama said a top aide had spoken to Yemen’s president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, and that Saleh had pledged full cooperation in the investigation.

One of the packages was found on a United Parcel Service cargo plane at East Midlands Airport, about 160 miles north of London. The other was discovered at a FedEx Corp facility in Dubai.

UPS and FedEx, the world’s largest cargo airline, said they were halting shipments from Yemen.

A TRIAL RUN?

One U.S. official and some analysts speculated that the parcels may have been a test of cargo screening procedures and the reaction of security officials.

“This may be a trial run,” the U.S. official said.

The White House said Saudi Arabia helped determine that the threat came from Yemen, while Britain, the United Arab Emirates and “other friends and partners” also provided information.

“The United States is grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their assistance in developing information that helped underscore the imminence of the threat emerging from Yemen,” said Obama’s homeland security adviser, John Brennan.

In the United States, UPS planes were checked and then cleared in New Jersey and Philadelphia. The Transportation Security Administration said they were searched “out of an abundance of caution.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it was tightening aviation security measures as a result of the scare. The British government said it was “too soon to say” whether it would follow suit but it was “urgently considering” what steps to take about freight coming from Yemen.

British police said an item found on the UPS plane was sent for further testing. CNN said it was an ink toner cartridge converted into a bomb.

An official source in the United Arab Emirates said “an explosive device was found in the package that originated in Yemen” and the parcel was similar to the one found in Britain.

“We were on to this,” Brennan said. “Clearly they are looking to identify vulnerabilities in our system.”

He said it was it was not clear how the devices were supposed to be activated.

The man accused of the failed Christmas Day bombing, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has told U.S. investigators he got the device and training from al Qaeda militants in Yemen.

Since then, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and one of its leading figures, American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, have become priority U.S. targets. The United States has stepped up military aid to Yemen, which has been trying to quell the resurgent branch of al Qaeda.

UN urges US and Iraq to probe Wikileaks torture claims

(BBC) – The US and Iraq should investigate claims of abuse contained in files published on the Wikileaks website, the UN’s rights chief says.

Navi Pillay said the files suggested US forces had continued to hand detainees to Iraqi authorities despite evidence that they had been tortured.

Meanwhile, the UN’s adviser on torture, Manfred Novak, called for a wider inquiry to include alleged US abuses.

The US military has denied turning a blind eye to torture in Iraq.

On Monday, Gen George Casey, who was in charge of US forces in Iraq from 2004 to 2007, said all soldiers were instructed to report any allegations of abuse.

But Ms Pillay said the Wikileaks disclosure of almost 400,000 secret war logs added to her concerns that serious breaches of international human rights law had occurred in Iraq.

“The US and Iraqi authorities should take necessary measures to investigate all allegations made in these reports and to bring to justice those responsible for unlawful killings, summary executions, torture and other serious human rights abuses,” she said in a statement.

Fewer allegations

Mr Novak said it was not enough to investigate only what happened in Iraq.

He urged US President Barack Obama to launch a full investigation into all allegations of torture against US military and intelligence officials.

He said the inquiry should include accounts of US agents handing detainees to states such as Egypt, Morocco and Syria, knowing they would be ill treated.

Mr Novak told journalists he now received far fewer allegations of torture than he had done during the so-called war on terror launched by former US President George W Bush.

But he pointed out that Mr Obama, like his predecessor, had refused to grant private interviews with detainees, and had invoked state secrecy privileges to prevent civil lawsuits by alleged victims of US torture.

US inquiry into China rare earth shipments

US trade officials say they are looking into a New York Times report that China is blocking shipments of rare earths to the US and Europe.

China mines 97% of the specialist metals crucial to green technology.

The report, citing anonymous industry sources, said Chinese customs officials had broadened export restrictions.

Meanwhile China’s commerce ministry has denied a report by the official China Daily that it will cut quotas by 30% next year to stop overmining.

“The report is completely false,” the ministry said in a statement.

“China will continue to supply rare earths to the world, and at the same time, to protect usable resources and sustainable development, China will also continue to impose restrictive measures on exploration, production and import and export of rare earths.”

Threat to economy

The US Geological Survey recognises 17 different rare earths.

They are used in everything from catalytic converters in cars to computer monitors, TVs and in pharmaceuticals.

Analysts say without these elements, much of the modern economy would shut down.

China accounts for about 97% of global rare-earth production. The BBC’s Paul Mason says the rare earth story goes to the heart of China’s relationship with the West.

The US, which is also a major buyer of rare earths, mined no rare earth elements last year.

US trade officials say they are now checking the New York Times report that China is blocking shipments to the US and Europe, following reports of a similar move against Japan.

The newspaper cited unnamed Chinese rare earths officials as saying that “the embargo is expanding”.

Nefeterius McPherson of the US Trade Representative’s office said: “We’re seeking more information in keeping with our recent announcement of an investigation into whether China’s actions and policies are consistent with WTO rules.”

Washington is investigating whether China is violating international trade rules by subsidising its clean energy industries.

Japan accused China of halting rare earth shipments last month amid a diplomatic row over Japan’s detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain whose trawler collided with two Japanese patrol boats.
