Hamish Falconer, the Deputy Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, has stated that he hosted a meeting on humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, with participation from officials of the World Food Programme (WFP)and the United Nations Population Fund (UNDP).
This British official wrote on X on Wednesday, January 29 that the UK remains firmly committed to the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.
He said, “It was a pleasure to host World Food Programme and the United Nations Population Fund in Afghanistan yesterday and discuss the lifesaving UK-funded assistance they are providing to the people of Afghanistan. We stand firm in our commitment to the people of Afghanistan, especially women and girls.”
Previously, Hamish Falconer had stated that defending the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan is one of the United Kingdom’s top priorities.
In a video posted on January 22 on X, he mentioned that he had brought together key officials and members of the United Nations to discuss how to ensure that their actions benefit all the people of Afghanistan.
While the UK has emphasized its continued humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, Donald Trump, on his first day in office, signed executive orders to suspend aid.
The Taliban Ministry of Economy has stated that, following the suspension of U.S. aid to Afghanistan, the activities of 50 international relief organizations have been halted in 28 provinces of the country.
Relief organizations have warned that Afghanistan’s women and girls will bear the brunt of the reduction in humanitarian aid.
However, critics of cash-based humanitarian aid to Afghanistan argue that such aid has reached the Taliban, reinforcing the group’s governance cycle.
As global humanitarian efforts continue, such dialogues are vital for ensuring that aid reaches those who need it the most and aligns with the goals of fostering human rights, women’s rights, and an inclusive government in Afghanistan.
