Explosions rock Boston Marathon finish lineAccording to reports the Boston Marathon headquarters has been locked down after an explosion was reported near the finish line.

The explosions reportedly took place inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel. The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

Marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos while local television also showed ambulances at the scene.

A White House official quoted by New York Times said, “The president has been notified of the incident in Boston. His administration is in contact with state and local authorities. He directed his administration to provide whatever assistance is necessary in the investigation and response.”

In the meantime Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick confirmed reports at least 3 people were killed and more than 100 people had been injured, some gravely.

He said Boston would be “open” on Tuesday but that there would be “a heightened law enforcement presence”.

Police officials earlier said at least 2 people have been killed and 22 others were injured following the blasts.

The blasts shattered the carnival atmosphere of one of the biggest sporting events in the US, causing panic and confusion.
