Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, announced on Friday that the Britain will provide Ukrainian forces with a major training program, as he visited the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
According to the statement released by the office of the British Prime Minister, the training program will have the capacity to train up to 10,000 soldiers every 120 days, applying “battle-proven” British Army expertise.
The offer was made as Boris Johnson made a surprise visit to Kyiv, where he was warmly welcomed by his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, 17th June.
“My visit today, in the depths of this war, is to send a clear and simple message to the Ukrainian people: the UK is with you, and we will be with you until you ultimately prevail,” said the British Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Johnson’s visit to Ukraine, which is his second since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, comes a day after European Union leaders Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz visited Kyiv.
They concurred with the European Commission on Friday that Ukraine should be granted candidate status for EU membership, which Kyiv had requested. The talks take place as Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that strong sanctions imposed on Moscow as a result of its invasion of Ukraine will cost the EU $400 billion. Putin said sanctions against Russia were a “double-edged sword” that would only harm the West.
