In recognition of Ukraine’s Independence Day on Wednesday, August 24, US President Joe Biden announced a roughly $3 billion security assistance package to support Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, as it fights the Russian invasion.

In a White House announcement on Wednesday, 24th of August, which coincides with the Ukrainian Independence Day, US president Biden congratulated the Ukrainians for their “extraordinary courage and dedication to freedom.”

In a statement released on Wednesday morning announcing the $2.98 billion package of weaponry and equipment for Ukraine, Biden stated, “And today is not only a celebration of the past, but a resounding affirmation that Ukraine proudly remains – and will remain – a sovereign and independent nation.”

“The United States of America is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine as they continue the fight to defend their sovereignty,” Biden’s statement further added.

Since the beginning of the Russian war in February, this package of aid from the US to Ukraine is reportedly the “single largest.”

According to the statement, the package will enable Ukraine to obtain air defense systems, artillery systems and ammunition, counter-unmanned aerial equipment, and radars to secure its long-term ability to defend itself.

The new move comes after the US provided Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of military equipment, economic aid, and humanitarian aid to support Kyiv’s forces as they resisted the Russian invasion and dealt with the war’s aftereffects.
