The official said that an avalanche hit a vehicle in Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province on Saturday, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries.

Mohammad Kamgar, the provincial director for Catastrophe Administration and Humanitarian Affairs, quoted the Xinhua news agency as saying that the incident occurred on Friday afternoon due to heavy snowfall in the Registan district of Badakhshan.

In the recent past, several people have died in freezing temperatures in Afghanistan, and about 70,000 livestock had also perished in the coldest winter in a decade in the country, officials said.

As a result of heavy snow, most of the roads which pass through the mountains have been closed, vehicles have got stuck, and passengers have died in freezing temperatures.

Badakhshan is one of the country’s provinces consistently hit with heavy snowfall and a chilly climate. During the winter, most of the districts of the province get blocked. This has made it difficult for humanitarian organizations to reach for relief and support.

Last week, another avalanche in the Reghistan district of Badakhshan killed two individuals and injured three others.

During January 2023, more than 170 people were killed due to the harsh winter across the country, and several others have been injured, according to the report.
