A senior army officer lost his life in an attack by unknown gunmen in Kabul city earlier today, the defense officials confirmed.

The incident took place in the vicinity of the 5th police district of the city in Company area after unknown gunmen opened fire on the senior officer as he was travelling towards his work station.

A source in the ministry of defense confirmed that the army officer, Hamid, who was serving in a military hospital, lost his life in the attack.

In the meantime, the Taliban group claims that the army officer was killed in an attack by the Taliban fighters.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid in a statement claimed that the officer was shot dead by the Taliban fighters in Company area.

This comes as the anti-government armed militants have been attempting to increase their attacks in the key cities of the country, including Kabul during the recent months.

The police chief of the police district number 5 of Kabul city was also wounded in a magnetic bomb explosion on Sunday.
