A fire at a hospital in China’s capital Beijing has killed at least 29 people, officials said.

A fire that ravaged a hospital in Beijing, the capital of China, resulted in at least 29 fatalities and numerous injuries, a city official said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the fire broke out at around 1 pm local time at the Beijing Changfend Hospital in the Fengtai district. It took half an hour to extinguish the fire.

Li Zongrong, the deputy director of the Fengtai district, reported that 26 patients, one family member, a nurse and a caretaker were among the 13 men and 16 women killed in the blaze.

Some people caught by the fire were compelled to climb down bedsheets tied together and escape through windows.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that a preliminary probe revealed the blaze had been caused by “sparks generated during the internal renovation and construction of the inpatient department of the hospital.”

According to authorities, 142 individuals were evacuated during the fire; 79 patients were transferred to hospitals nearby, and 78 were taken to an unharmed adjacent building.

A total of 12 people have been detained, including the head of the hospital, her deputy and the head of the construction crew.
