110705-S-1034V-632Former head of the security transition commission, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Sunday formally filed nomination for the upcoming presidential elections.

Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai filed the nomination along with his first and second vice-president, with the independent election commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Sunday morning.

He has named Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum as his first vice-president, and former justice minister Sarwar Danish as his second vice-president to run for 2014 presidential elections.

This comes as the registration process for presidential candidates is due to end today. Noor Mohammad Noor, a spokesman for independent election commission of Afghanistan said the registration process will finish at 4pm today.

At least ten presidential candidates have filed nominations with the independent election commission of Afghanistan, inclding Bismillah Sher, Abdullah Abdullah, Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf, Abdul rahim WArdak, Syed Ahmad Gilani.

Former Afghan foreign minister Dr. Zalmai Rasool is also expected to file nomination for the presidential elections today.
