Sardar Mohammad Nadir NaeemAnother Afghan presidential candidate Sardar Mohammad Nadir Naeem stepped down from the upcoming elections in the favour of Dr. Zalmai Rasoul.

Javid Faisal spokesman for Dr. Zalmai Rasoul’s electoral campaign office confirmed that Sardar Mohammad Naeem joined Dr. Zalmai Rasoul’s team.

Sardar Mohammad Nadir Naeem said the decision to withdraw from the elections in favour of Zalmai Rasoul was taken following a Jirga (gathering) with his supporters.

This comes as Karza’s elder brother Qayum Karzai announced his withdrawal from the upcoming elections in the favour of Zalmai Rasoul earlier this month.

Former Afghan defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak also retired from elections this month, however he did not announce his support to any specific candidate.

The withdrawal of Sardar Mohammad Nadir Naeem from the elections will further reduce the number of presidential contenders to eight candidates.

The presidential election is scheduled to be organized on 5th April 2014. Campaigns for upcoming presidential elections will end by 2nd April 2014.

The elections will mark Afghanistan’s first democratic transfer of power.
