The International Amnesty Organization reported an increase in executions last year, stating that 74% of these executions occurred in Iran.
In a report released on Tuesday, May 28, the organization wrote that 1,153 people were executed worldwide in 2023, the highest recorded figure in nearly a decade.
China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and the United States recorded the highest number of executions in 2023.
According to statistics provided by Amnesty International, only the Islamic Republic of Iran executed at least 853 people in 2023, accounting for 74% of the total executions last year.
The execution of 1,153 individuals in 2023 marks the highest recorded figure since 2015 and indicates a 30% increase in executions compared to 2022.
In addition to the dire situation regarding executions, Afghanistan has faced significant challenges concerning prisoners since August 2021. Following the Taliban’s takeover, many prisons fell under their control, leading to concerns about the treatment and release of inmates.
The absence of a centralized authority to address these issues has created a vacuum of accountability, leaving prisoners vulnerable to violations of their rights and dignity. The international community has called for urgent action to address the plight of prisoners in Afghanistan and ensure their safety and well-being amidst the ongoing political turmoil.
