The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has announced that China provided vital aid to some 70,000 vulnerable Afghan families affected by acute food insecurity in Afghanistan.

WFP on Tuesday, May 30 in a report stressed that food aid will be distributed to those families who are faced with acute hunger in rural parts of Afghanistan.

“The World Food Program in Afghanistan is facing an acute funding crisis this year, and this timely contribution from the Chinese government comes at a moment when more sustained support is needed,” Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP representative and country director said.

According to WFP, with international support to Afghanistan, some three million people have survived the food crisis, and more than 15 million people throughout the country are faced with acute hunger.

Previously, WFP announced that it has minimized its aid programs to Afghanistan by $8 million due to a lack of funding.

The global food program has emphasized that with the financial aid of China, the organization can support some 70,000 vulnerable Afghan families with food items including flour, chickpeas, cooking oil and salt for the next two months.

Wang Yu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Afghanistan has emphasized that his country has delivered live-saving humanitarian aid packages to Afghanistan in 2022, aimed at overcoming economic challenges.

As per the latest report of WFP, in 2022, some 23 million Afghans including 11.2 million women and 12.3 million children have received food and cash aid.

This comes as WFP had previously warned that Afghanistan is among the hunger-striven countries in the world.
