Afghan government is due to take control and responsibility of the Bagram prison which is under the control of the United States army.

According to reports at least 3000 detainees are kept in Bagram prison which also includes a number of Taliban prisoners.

Afghan presidential palace following a statement announced that the transfer of the Bagram prison to Afghan security forces is a major achievement.

The source further added the transfer of the prison will be performed under a ceremony on 10th of September.

In the meantime a NATO official quoted by AFP said NATO is aware of announcement however the source did not comment in this regard.

This comes as Afghanistan and United States signed an agreement earlier in March to transfer the responsibilities of the prisons in Afghanistan to Afghan security forces.

Afghan president Hamid Karzai earlier urged to transfer the responsibilities of the prisons in Afghanistan until the end of 2014 when all NATO troops will Afghanistan. The transfer of the prisons to Afghan security forces was one of the main conditions of the Afghan government prior in order to sign a strategic pact with Washington.

A number of Taliban militants who have been detained by NATO troops in Afghanistan are being kept in Bagram prison however based on the agreement the Afghan government needs to consult with United States regarding the freedom of the Taliban militants from Bagram prison.
