M-I-C-TThe government of Afghanistan suspended the Short Message Service (SMS) of the leading mobile phone companies late on Friday.

According to the Afghanistan Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (ATRA) officials, the services were suspended after receiving instructions from the independent election commission of Afghanistan (IEC).

This comes as Electoral Complaint Commission (ECC) officials said Friday that presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah violated the election law by continuing to their campaigns through SMS.

ECC Chief, Abdul Satar Sadat said mass text messages were sent during the silent hours by Dr. Abdullah’s campaign team.

Mr. Sadat further added that Dr. Zalmai Rassoul’s campaign team also continued to their campaign during the silent hours through a website “Khabaryal”.

In the meantime, Nai organization which is supporting the open media in Afghanistan said the suspension of SMS by the government has created issues for the people of Afghanistan.

The organization called for an immediate resumption of SMS services and said all the media agencies and observers will use the SMS service to share the information regarding the elections across the country.
