
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 282.5% in April, according to data released Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO also said that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases was 4,954 in April, of which nine were dead while showing a surge in the cases compared to March, with four deaths cases.
In April 2023, 18,049 tests were performed in public laboratories, an increase of 50.7% from March 2023. The test positivity rate rose from 10.8% to 27.4% in the same month.
About 196,000 people were immunized during the reporting period, and the percentage of those who received at least one dose marginally increased to 37.4%.
Earlier in May, the Chief of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) declared “with great hope” an end to COVID-19 as a public health emergency.
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared that the COVID-19 public health emergency, which has been in effect globally since 2020, will end.
“Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,” the WHO chief said. “It is, therefore, with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” Ghebreyesus said.
According to the director, the global COVID-19 outbreak prompted the WHO to issue a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020, the most significant alarm level permitted by international law.
WHO estimates that “at least 20 million” people have died due to t
