Afghanistan Rugby Team to participate in the Asian Development 7s Tournament

Afghanistan National Rugby 7s Team will take part in series of 7s matches in the upcoming Asian Development Sevens Tournament. The tournament endorsed by the Asian Rugby Football Union and the World Rugby will kick off on Friday February 26, 2016 in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates.
Afghanistan has already participated in the similar tournaments in 2013 and 2014 hosted by UAE Rugby Federation and has managed to secure the runner up title at the West Asia Rugby Sevens Tournament.
The participating nations in the tournament are: Chinese Taipei, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Afghanistan, Syria, Thailand, and the host nation UAE. As rugby is developing in Asia the participating nations this year in the event is doubled as compare to previous years.
Afghanistan is still an associate member of the Asian Rugby Football Union ( ARFU) and will have the opportunity in the tournament to play against some full member teams of ARFU and World Rugby.
Mohammad Mansoor Majid, the president of Afghanistan Rugby Federation expressed happiness for getting the opportunity to play with full member teams and added that it will be an honor for Afghan squad to be part of the auspicious event.
“With the upcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics being held in Japan, the World Rugby focus is on Asia and Afghanistan Rugby Federation has already shared the plans for the development of rugby in Afghanistan with the National Olympic Committee and General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports” Said Majid.
“Like Afghanistan’s successful Cricket and Football teams which unites the country’s ethnic groups and bring smiles on the faces of Afghans, Afghanistan Rugby Federation will do its best in the event to follow the path of Afghanistan Cricket Board and Afghanistan Football Federation to bring joys to the war ravaged country “Pledged Asad Ziar, the CEO and Vice President of the federation.
Asad Ziar further added “through sports development, we can achieve wider human development goals and said that the valuable effects of sport for development are still not downtrodden to their full extent, sport can lend a hand bridge cultural and ethnic divides, strengthen social integration, and promote healthy lifestyles, endorse tolerance and non-discrimination.
It has already been proved that sport help stay in shape, teaches how to organize time, boosts friendships, and builds relationships with peers and adults .Sport can play a vital role for a safer, prosperous and peaceful society, through its educational values, teamwork and worldwide network.
Sayed Mustafa Sadat, the skipper of the Afghan national rugby 7s squad, expressed confidence in his young team and said they will perform well in the tournament. “We have been training hard over the past two months and players are confident to play well and bring smiles on the faces of our countrymen,” Said Mustafa in a gathering at the Afghanistan Rugby Federation head office in Kabul. Our people have seen years and years of atrocities and now we are among the top ten cricketing nations in the world,” he added. “We have to encourage Afghan businessmen and the government to support the development of rugby in Afghanistan to make the country more peaceful and prosperous.”
The winner of the series in Al Ain will win a place for their union to participate in the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2016. The series will feature three legs and will be played between September – October, 2016.
