Afghanistan achieved a historic victory by defeating Pakistan for the first time in one-day cricket. They accomplished this feat by executing their most successful chase in the format during an exhilarating World Cup thriller.

In this match, Pakistan batted first and set a target of 283 runs in 50 overs, losing 7 players. In the second innings, Afghanistan chased down 286 runs despite losing two players, achieving their first-ever victory over Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup.

During the first innings of the Afghanistan-Pakistan match, Abdullah Shafiq from Pakistan scored 58 runs, but the rest of the team faced difficulties against the strong Afghan bowlers and got out.

Noor Ahmad, a young Afghan player, took three wickets, and Naveen-ul-Haq took two, significantly contributing to the team’s success among Afghanistan’s bowlers.

In the second innings, Afghanistan had a strong start, with opening bowlers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran showing remarkable resilience, setting the stage for their victory. Gurbaz scored 65 runs, and Zadran contributed 87 runs to the team’s total.

Additionally, Rahmat Shah, another standout player, played a crucial role by staying on the field until the end and scoring 77 runs. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also had a good day, scoring 48 runs and maintaining excellent coordination with Rahmat Shah during the match.

After Afghanistan’s victory, Rahmanullah Gurbaz shared his long-awaited joy, expressing that he had been waiting for this moment for years.

In the post-match ceremony, Ibrahim Zadran was honoured as the best player. He dedicated the Best Player of the Match award and Afghanistan’s triumph over Pakistan to the migrants forcibly returning from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

After England, the reigning champions from the previous Cricket World Cup, Pakistan became the second team with a history of winning the tournament to lose to Afghanistan in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. This marked the first time in history that Afghanistan won two matches in a Cricket World Cup.

With its second victory in the World Cup, Afghanistan earned four points and climbed to sixth place in the Cricket World Cup standings. Afghanistan’s next match is against Sri Lanka, and with a win, they could be contenders for a spot in the top four teams.
