Saturday, March 21, marks the first day of the Persian New Year, or Nowruz, year 1394. This event has been celebrated for more than 3000 years and is especially significant for Afghanistan as the country embarks upon a new path of peace and independence.
“On behalf of the 40 countries participating [in the Resolute Support] mission, I would like to wish you and your families a very peaceful and joyful new year,” said General John Campbell, Commander, Resolute Support and US Forces Afghanistan.
“Nowruz is the time to celebrate the coming of spring and the rebirth of the world around us. Rebirth and renewal are fitting sentiments for Afghanistan. Each day I see Afghans making a difference, making their nation stronger. This year, we look forward to seeing this ancient land continue to become a stable, peaceful and prosperous country. Manana Tashakur,” he continued.
In celebration of Nowruz, three days of celebration will occur all across Afghanistan including events at many provincial capitals.
