The Afghanistan national cricket team secured a commanding victory over powerful Australia by 21 runs in the 2024 ICC World Cup. In this match, Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first.

The Blue Tigers posted a competitive total of 148 runs, driven by standout performances from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran.

In the second innings, Afghanistan’s bowler Noorin Al-Haq made an early impact, dismissing two key Australian players. Noorin Al-Haq took three wickets from the opposition, setting the stage for a crucial contribution from Gulbadin Naib. Naib’s dismissal of Maxwell (59), one of Australia’s key players, significantly eased Afghanistan’s path to victory.

Furthermore, Australia lost all its players by the 19th over, managing only 127 runs in total.

This historic win marked Afghanistan’s first-ever victory against Australia in a World Cup match. Despite the loss, Australia remained in second place in the table with two points.

Afghanistan’s next match in the Super Eight stage is against Bangladesh, while Australia faces India, a team in good form. If Australia loses to India and Afghanistan surpasses Bangladesh, the Blue Tigers will advance to the World Cup semi-finals.

The upcoming matches will be crucial as Afghanistan aims to build on their momentum while Australia seeks to regain its footing in the tournament.
