The construction of the initial phase of the Afghan-Uzbek joint market on the border area between the two counties has been completed, according to Uzbek officials.

Qut Jore Youf, the deputy of the Afghan-Uzbek joint market stated that this project was created to expand business relations and create job opportunities for Afghans and the people of Uzbekistan. Afghan traders along with Uzbek entrepreneurs can sell their products in this market.

According to Uzbek officials, more than four thousand shops, health centers, restaurants, and guest houses will be built in this market, and the distribution of shops for traders has already begun.

The announcement adds that Afghan citizens can shop in this market for ten days without receiving a visa.

“At least $75 million has been invested in this big project, creating big trade facilities for traders of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan,” Bakhtiar Roziof, head of the trade center said.

The creation of this market can provide a great opportunity to showcase the country’s domestic products and the economic activities of traders, according to the officials of the Balkh Chamber of Commerce, Investment and Traders.

The market will also pave the way for the expansion of economic activities and bilateral trade relations between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. This comes as the country is plagued with a dire humanitarian and economic situation, with almost zero foreign investment. The de facto authorities of Afghanistan look for every single opportunity to ease the economic pressure and convince national and international investors to invest in Afghanistan.

Uzbekistan is one of the few Central Asian countries which has maintained close relations with the Taliban since their return to power in August 2021. Besides, delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, they have initiated certain economic projects aimed at benefiting the people of both countries.
