A court in capital Kabul on Saturday sentenced two Afghan police officers to jail for assisting alcohol smuggler and being reckless while performing their duties.
A spokesman for counternarcotics and intoxicants court Khalid Mohid said a senior Afghan police official is among the two who were jailed by the court.
Mr. Mohid further added the court sentenced the senior police official for 18 months in jail for being reckless and assisting alcohol smuggler along with a junior police official.
He also said the second police officer was accused of releasing a smuggler and jailing a durgs addicted individual instead of him.
The two police officials were working in the 9th district of capital Kabul, Khalid Mohid said, adding that the two accused have the rights to appeal for the reconsideration of court verdict.
This comes as alcoholic drinks are being sold and purchased hiddenly in a number of major cities of Afghanistan despite the usage, storing, transportation and manufacture of alcohol is banned in the country.
Counternarcotics and intoxicants court spokesman Khalid Mohid said around 50 smugglers and retailers of alcoholic drinks have been detained during the past one month.
He also said at least 53 individuals including 33 Afghan government employees and police officers were jailed last year in this regard.
