Afghan officials confirms former Taliban leader missing in UAE

Mutasim Agha JanThe ministry of foreign affairs of Afghanistan confirmed that the former senior Taliban leader Agha Jan Mutasim has gone missing in United Arab Emirates.

Foreign ministry spokesman, Shekib Mostaghni told reporters in Kabul that the Afghan officials have started negotiations with the UAE officials regarding the fate of Agha Jan Mutasim.

Mr. Mostaghni further added that the government of Afghanistan has stepped up efforts to take practical steps to find out Agha Jan Mutasim.

He said there are no reports regarding whereabouts of Agha Jan Mutasim.

Agha Jan Mutasim is believed to be an influential Taliban leader who could play a vital role in Afghan peace talks with the Taliban group.

He met with the senior members of the Afghan high peace council (HPC) in Dubai last month and was due to meet with the Afghan peace delegation in the near future in UAE.

Sources close to Agha Jan Mutasim including his family members have confirmed that he has gone missing in UAE and they cannot contact him during the past several days.
