Thursday, June 23 – A number of MPs’ in Wolesi Jirga on Wednesday voted for the summon of attorney general for his involvement in establishment of a special election court.

Afghan Mps’ in Wolesi Jirga said that the Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdul Salam Azeemi, Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Alako and two other members of supreme court will be summoned by Afghan House of Representatives.

Afghan MPs’ said that these authorities should be present to the House of Representatives and respond to representatives’ concerns.

Afghan MPs’ decision on summon of these authorities comes as it is said that the special court is going to announce their conclusion in regards to parliamentary elections fraud.

The court – which some members of parliament contend is unconstitutional – is expected to a deliver a verdict within days on the conduct of September’s disputed parliamentary election. The verdict could cast doubt on the legitimacy of some members currently sitting in parliament.

Concerns in House of Representatives have increased after it is said that a number of Afghan MPs’ were blamed to be involved in fraudulent acts by the special court and that their membership in Afghan parliament will be deprived.

A spokesman for the court has said the judges plan to deliver their final verdict in the next day or two.

Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Alako had a key role in forming the special court after declaring the parliamentary election’s final result illegal. The president approved the formation of the tribunal.

Abdul Zahir Qadir, a lawmaker from eastern Nangarhar province, said Alako should appear before the house for “creating controversies.”

However, in this case whether the House of representatives could legally summon Afghanistan’s Supreme Court and the Attorney General, there is disagreement among lawyers.

Of 127 MPs present, 125 voted in favour of summoning the Attorney General, the chief justice and the two other judges.

Attorney General and the Supreme Court yet to comment.
