Afghanistan National Army soldiers stand alert in a street in Herat, west of Kabul, Afghanistan, Friday, June 13, 2014. With fears of violence high, Afghanistan braced for a final election on Saturday to choose a new president to replace the only leader the nation has known since the Taliban were ousted and guide the transition to a country that will have to wean itself off near-total dependence on international aid after foreign combat troops withdraw at the end of this year. Defense ministry spokesman, Gen. Zahir Azimi, said Thursday that the Afghan national security forces are currently conducting clean up operations.

According to reports, around 800 Taliban launched attacks in Sangin district six days back which spread in three other districts including Kajaki, Nawzad and Mosa Qala.

Azimi said the Afghan national security forces successfully suppressed the Taliban offensive and said there were internal and external motives behind the attack.

He said Taliban militants used similar tactics which have been previously used in other offensives in the region and launched the attack.

In the meantime, interior ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediq, said Afghan security forces have taken control of the situation and first aid is being provided to the displaced people.

Sediqi said around 1000 families were displaced due to the clashes; however, local officials in Helmand have said that around 2500 families have been displaced.
