The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces have seized a sophisticated missile in southern Kandahar province.
Kandahar Police Chief Gen. Tadin Khan Achakzai said “Our forces discovered a weapons cache in Kandahar City which contained an unidentified rocket. Right now it’s currently under investigation to determine where this weapon came from.”
Gen. Raziq further added that the Afghan forces seized the missile during an operation conducted in the 7th police district of Kandahar city.
He said the rocket is equipped with modern targeting system and capability to cause enormous damage.
Earlier, reports had emerged suggesting that an Iranian made missile was seized by Afghan forces.
This comes as U.S. officials had earlier displayed the weapons and military equipment supplied by Iran to Taliban in Afghanistan and other militant groups in the Middle East.
A Fadjr missile was also put on display which was seized by the Afghan National Army in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan.
The U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook confirmed late in November last year that the missile was captured by Afghan forces in Helmand province.
Ambassador Hook also added that the coalition forces have also captured an Iranian made drone, Shaheed-123, in Afghanistan which was put on display for the media.
According to Ambassador Hook, Iran supplies similar weapons and missiles to the militant groups including Houthis in Middle East.
