The Taliban militants captured the district after launching coordinated attacks nearly a week ago.
The local officials said the district was recaptured following three days of air and ground offensive and raised the Afghan flag over the district headquarters this morning.
Deputy provincial governor Baryalai Basharyar confirmed that the control of the district was retaken by the security forces.
He did not disclose further information regarding the casualties of the Afghan forces and the Taliban militants during the operations.
However, he confirmed that the district police chief Abdul Majeed Gilem Bafi was killed along with twelve other policemen after they were captured by the Taliban militants.
The Taliban militants have not commented regarding the report so far.
Faryab is among the volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militants are actively operating in its various districts and often carry out insurgency activities.
