Australia’s 9NEWS reports that the unnamed soldier was to attend a Defence-sponsored training course at the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law under the defence co-operation program in Sydney.
According to the news agency the officer was last seen in the foyer of his Sydney hotel on the afternoon of August 9, indicating he was waiting for relatives.
Police say that the Afghan embassy in Canberra and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection had been notified.
Australian officials have not yet commented on whether the officer might be seeking Australia’s protection. The country’s Department of Defence says that their primary concern is the welfare of the soldier.
“Our primary concern is for the welfare of the individual,” a spokesman for the department said.
