Afghan army and police kill 50 Taliban militants in Nangarhar

Afghanistan Afghan Ar_HughAccording to local authorities in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, at least 50 militants were killed in a series of operations in this province.

Provincial security chief, Fazal Ahmad Sherzad said Wednesday that the militants were killed during the past five days in Hesarak district.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, provincial governor spokesman said earlier that the Afghan security forces have launched military operations in Nangarhar province a month ago.

Mr. Abdulzai further added that the operations are being conducted in regions close to Pakistan border.

He said Afghan national army and Afghan national police are leading the operations in Achin, Batikot, Chaparhar, Hesarak and Shirzad districts.

The anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban militants have not commented regarding the report so far.

Nangarhar is among the relatively restive provinces in eastern Afghanistan where Taliban militants and insurgents from the other militant groups are openly operating in its various districts.

Taliban militants frequently attack Afghan security forces and launch attacks on government compounds in Nangarhar province.
