Security officials in Balkh province say an Afghan Air Force officer was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in Mazar-e-Sharif.

Mohammad Hanif Rezayi, a spokesman for the 209th Shaheen Corps, told the media, this incident took place on Sunday afternoon.

According to Rezayi, the incident happened in the Kart-e-Zaraat area in PD9 of Mazar-e-Sharif, the city of Balkh province.

This comes as, last week, unknown gunmen assassinated the chief physician of the military’s 209th Shaheen corps in Mazar-e-Sharif

However, the number of targeted attacks on security forces and government employees has escalated dramatically in the past few months.

Although no individual or group has claimed responsibility for such attacks.

But the Taliban has continuously been blamed to be involved in the targeted assassinations and outflank attacks.
